The North Carolina men's golf team is tied for eighth place in the Bank of Tennessee tournament after the first round. East Tennessee State leads the tournament by one stroke after shooting a six-under 282. Kentucky is in second place after shooting a 293. Wake Forest is four strokes behind the leader after shooting two-under 826. Rounding out the top five are Auburn and Virginia Tech. They are tied for fourth place at one-under par 287.
The Tar Heels were led by senior Barden Berry of Kinston, N.C. and junior Robert Riesen from Pinehurst, N.C. Both carded a one-under 71 and are tied for 11th place. Freshman Kevin O'Connell shot even-par 72 and is tied for 23rd. Sophomore David Holzworth, a native of Chapel Hill, fired a three-over 75 and is tied for 52nd. Senior Reed Darsie, also from Chapel Hill, is tied for 62nd, after shooting a four-over 76.
Ben Fuqua of Kentucky holds a one-stroke lead after the first round.
Fuqua fired a five-under 67. Behind him is Rhys Enoch from East Tennessee State, Patrick Rada from South Carolina, and Drew Weaver from Virginia Tech. They are in a three-way tie for second place. Glenn Northcutt from Auburn is three-under par after shooting 69. 31 players are within five strokes of the lead.
