In the second half, North Carolina out-scored the Gamecocks, 12-0, had 14 first downs to just two for South Carolina and out-gained the Gamecocks 286 to 62.
North Carolina's defense allowed just one third-down conversion in 12 attempts by South Carolina, including 0 for 6 in the second half. South Carolina's only third-down conversion came with less than a minute to play in the second quarter on a 9-yard run by Cory Boyd on a 3rd-and-1 play from the UNC 21.
North Carolina had 22 first downs, seven more than South Carolina.
South Carolina came into the game number one in the nation allowing 126.5 passing yards per game. The Tar Heels threw for 285 yards today (all by quarterback T.J. Yates). It was the third-highest passing yardage for Yates this season. The previous high for passing yards was 227 by Kentucky.
Freshman wide receiver Greg Little had his most productive day as a Tar Heel with 79 total yards, including his first career touchdown on an 18-yard reception in the fourth quarter. Little had 29 rushing yards, including a 23-yard run, and added four catches for 50 yards. He entered Saturday's game with just 12 yards from scrimmage on the season.
Wide receiver Brandon Tate did not play in the second half due to a head injury he suffered while returning a punt late in the second quarter. Hakeem Nicks also missed most of the third quarter due to a sprained left ankle.
Three different players - Little, quarterback T.J. Yates and receiver Joe Dailey - took offensive snaps for the Tar Heels.
Quarterback T.J. Yates' TD pass to Little was his 10th of the season and first since the Virginia game Sept. 15. He finished 22 for 42 for 285 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Despite battling an ankle sprain, sophomore receiver Hakeem Nicks caught eight passes for 114 yards to give him 39 receptions on the season in just seven games. Last year he caught 39 passes in 12 games.
Redshirt freshman Johnny White rushed for a team-high 37 yards on just six carries. His 21-yard run in the fourth matched his season-best rush.
Senior defensive end Hilee Taylor registered his career-best seventh sack of the season and needs just one more to move into a tie for eighth on UNC's single-season list. Taylor, who now has at least one tackle for loss in six straight games, owns 15.5 career sacks. He is 4.5 sacks behind William Fuller (1980-83) for fifth on the Tar Heels' career list.
Linebacker Mark Paschal recorded his first career interception in the fourth quarter. It was Carolina's eighth pick of the season and its fifth in the last two games.
Senior linebacker Durell Mapp recorded a game-high 14 tackles for fourth double-digit tackle game this season.
Freshman defensive tackle Marvin Austin recorded a sack for the third straight game and now has 3.5 sacks on the season - all over this stretch.
Freshman linebacker Quan Sturdivant continued his stretch of big plays with a second quarter fumble recovery. Last week against Miami, he blocked a punt and recorded his first career interception.
Place-kicker Connor Barth missed his first field goal since the 2005 season Saturday when he sent a 49-yarder wide left in the first quarter. That miss snapped a string of 19 consecutive made field goals, which was the nation's longest streak.
Barth bounced back to connect on a 45-yarder in the second quarter for his 44th career field goal. He moved past Clint Gwaltney (1988-91) into second place on the Tar Heels' career field goal list. Barth is now eight field goals behind Josh McGee (1996-99) for the school record.
