Tar Heels Take Hold of Fourth Place at Jerry Pate Intercollegiate

The birdies were dropping for the North Carolina men's golf team and the rest of the field at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate through two rounds on Monday. The Tar Heels shot a six-under 278 in morning session and then came back to post a 14-under 270 in the afternoon. The combined 20-under par score helped them take a firm hold on fourth place heading into Tuesday's third round. Carolina is ten shots back of host and first place Alabama and just three and four shots behind UAB and UNLV, respectively.

Freshman Kevin O'Connell led the way for Carolina with a four-under 67 in the first and a five-under 66 in the afternoon. The nine-under 133 score put him into a four-way tie for fifth place and just three shots behind the leader. Senior Barden Berry also had a strong day following an even-par 71 with a five under 66 to sit in a tie for 13th. Sophomore David Holzworth finds himself in a tie for 18th while senior Reed Darsie and junior Robert Riesen round out the Tar Heel line-up in 32nd and 37th.

Alabama's Mark Harrell has the second round lead after posting scores of 66 and 64 on the day including a hole-in-one on hole 17 in the second round. UNLV's Seung-Su-Han and ETSU's Seamus Power are just a stroke back at 11-under. Florida's Billy Horschel is alone in third place while UAB's Cathal O'Malley, Auburn's Jay Moseley, and Alabama's Matt Hughes are tied with O'Connell for fifth.

Play continues tomorrow with the third and final round at the par-71 Old Overton Club in Birmingham, Ala.
