CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Former University of North Carolina golfer Tom Scherrer stared pressure right in the eye last week and responded with one of his best performances of the year. Scherrer stood in 27th place on the Nationwide Tour's money list last week and needed to move up to the top 25 to earn his PGA TOUR card for 2008. Scherrer responded by tying for third place at the Nationwide Tour Championship at Barona Creek in Lakeside, Calif. He fired an 18-under-par 266 with rounds of 66-65-67-68 to finish just two strokes behind champion Richard Johnson and collected $44,950 to move up to No. 20 on the Nationwide Tour's final money list with $220,138.
"I am extremely happy with the way this season has gone for me," said Scherrer, who currently resides in Raleigh, N.C. "I have hit the ball nicely all season. At the beginning of the season my putter was shaky, which means I have a lot of work to do for next year. But you always have things to work on during the offseason, the difference this year is that my offseason will be much longer since I won't have to go to Q-School. It is always fun to test yourself against the best players in the world and that is what will be the best part about heading back to the PGA TOUR next year."
Scherrer, who played on the 1990-92 Tar Heel golf teams, enjoyed a highly-successful season on the Nationwide Tour this year, including 15 made cuts in 26 appearances and eight top-25 finishes. He posted the third win of his career at the Price Cutter Charity Championship, adding it to previous victories at the 1995 Knoxville Open and the 1998 Upstate Classic.
While at Carolina, Scherrer was a 1991 Honorable Mention All-America and tied for fourth place at the 1991 NCAA Championship. A member of the `91 Walker Cup Team, Scherrer was the champion of the 1990 North and South Amateur and was the runner-up at the 1992 U.S. Amateur.
This is not the first time Scherrer has had his PGA TOUR card. He won the 2000 Kemper Insurance Open and has posted eight top-10 PGA finishes and earned over $2.5 million.
Three other former Tar Heel golfers have advanced to the second stage of the PGA Q-School - Dustin Bray, Kevin Silva and Ted Smith. Bray played on the 2001-04 Tar Heel teams while Silva played on the 2003-05 teams and Smith played on the 2003-06 teams. The second stage of the Q-School will be played Nov. 14-17 and is a 72-hole event just like the first stage. The third and final stage of the Q-School is a 108-hole event to be played Nov. 28-Dec. 3.
