GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Gavin Petracca was named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week for the 2007 season after helping the No. 18 Tar Heels to a 14-10 win over Ohio State Saturday afternoon at Calvert Hall College High School in Baltimore.
The redshirt freshman made his debut in a North Carolina uniform a memorable one by scoring four goals and adding an assist in the Tar Heel victory last week. Petracca helped North Carolina to its ninth straight season-opener win, tallying a five-point performance, while starting the first game of his career. The attackman also claimed three ground balls in the match and scored his four goals while taking only five shots.
The Tar Heels will be at home for the first time this season this weekend as the squad plays back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday against No. 14 Denver and Dartmouth. The Tar Heels host Denver Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field, looking to avenge an 11-8 loss to the Pioneers suffered last year in Denver. Carolina will then host Dartmouth on Sunday at Noon at Fetzer Field.
