CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team has moved up to No. 1 in the Inside Lacrosse media poll this week, the magazine announced on Tuesday.
The Tar Heels took over the top spot after beating Northwestern, 9-8 in double overtime, last Saturday in Chapel Hill. The Wildcats are the two-time defending NCAA champions and were ranked No. 1 in the media poll last week.
Carolina grabbed the No. 1 ranking despite receiving fewer first-place votes than Atlantic Coast Conference rival Duke, which is ranked No. 2. The Tar Heels received four first-place votes and 232 overall points in the voting. Duke had five first-place votes and 230 points, while Northwestern had three first-place votes and 220 points.
Carolina is followed in this week's poll by No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Northwestern, No. 4 Georgetown, No. 5 Princeton, No. 6 Maryland, No. 7 Virginia, No. 8 Notre Dame, No. 9 Dartmouth and No. 10 Johns Hopkins.
The Tar Heels (1-0) will face No. 20 Oregon (2-0) on Friday evening at 6 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
