GREENSBORO, N.C. - GREENSBORO, N.C. - Duke's Zack Greer and North Carolina's Shane Walterhoefer share this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week honor. Walterhoefer turned in two of the most dominating performances in the face-off circle in UNC men's lacrosse history in helping the Tar Heels sweep No. 12 Denver 11-8 and Dartmouth 12-6 last week. Greer also led the Blue Devils to wins over Dartmouth and Denver by totaling 13 points on eight goals and five assists.
Against Denver, Walterhoefer equaled his career high of 16 face-off wins (in 22 attempts) and had six ground balls. That performance equaled the ninth most face-off victories in a game in Tar Heel history, but Walterhoefer bettered that effort significantly Sunday against Dartmouth. Walterhoefer won 19 of 21 face-offs against the Big Green. Those 19 wins equaled the second most in a match in UNC history (school record is 22) and he had 13 ground balls, a career high and just two short of the UNC school record. In fact, on only five occasions in Tar Heel history has a player recorded more than 13 ground balls in a game.
Greer led Duke to wins over Dartmouth (17-11) and No. 12 Denver (13-9) by totaling 13 points on eight goals and five assists. The junior attackman had six goals and two assists in the win over Dartmouth, while reaching the 80-goal plateau for his career. The Canadian became the 33rd player in Duke lacrosse history to amass 100 career points, while the eight total points against Dartmouth matched Greer's career single-game best effort (8 vs. VMI in 2005). He also added two ground balls in the win. Greer picked up two goals and three assists in the victory over Denver, while adding five ground balls versus the Pioneers. Greer now has 109 career points on 82 goals and 27 assists through 30 career games and has scored two or more goals in 24 of 30 career games at Duke.
The Tar Heels will next travel to Navy for a 7 p.m. ET contest on Friday, March 2, while the Blue Devils will take on ACC foe Maryland, Friday at 7:30 p.m.
