NEW LONDON, N.C. - North Carolina received a 69 and 70 from Martin Ureta and David Holzworth and put up a team-total 287 to put them in a tie for third with Georgia Tech Friday after the first round of the ACC Championship at the Old North State Club. At one-under par, the Tar Heels are just two strokes off the lead pace set by Clemson.
With a round highlighted by birdies on 10, 11, and 13, Ureta finished at three-under and currently joins Georgia Tech's Robert Castro and Duke's Michael Schachner in third, one stroke off the lead. Holzworth also found three birdies on the back that led him to his finish at two-under. He currently has sole possession of sixth place.
In all, Carolina notched eight birdies on the back, while only making four on the front. "I'm pleased with how we ended up today. We didn't get off to a great start, but we scratched and clawed", said Head Coach John Inman following the first round. "We started making some putts and that makes everything better. I'm proud we hung in there today and got it in under par."
After Ureta and Holzworth, Barden Berry turned in a 72 and Reed Darsie carded a 76. Like Holzworth, Berry finished strong with a birdie on 18 to bring him to even-par. Robert Riesen rounded out the field for the Tar Heels with a 77.
Ahead of Carolina is both Clemson at three-under and Duke at two-under. Clemson received a 68 from Kyle Stanley to help their cause. Stanley, along with Virginia Tech's Ryan Sypniewski, is currently atop the individual leader board at four-under. Sypniewski led Virginia Tech's charge and helped put them in fifth to round out the top five.
Carolina will need to pass Duke to gain the Carlyle Cup point for the event. Whichever school finishes higher after Sunday will receive the point. Going into today, the competition is knotted up at 10.5 points apiece with all five remaining points to be decided this weekend.
This is the sixth straight year the ACC Championship has been played at the Old North State Club. Featuring a par 72, 7,100 yard layout, the venue has hosted the event 11 times overall. To track Saturday's second round, simply visit www.golfstat.com.
