STATE COLLEGE, PA. -- Penn State's Kerry Shea scored a goal on a free position shot with 47 second left to play in overtime to lead No. 10 Penn State to an 8-7 win over No. 2 North Carolina in college women's lacrosse action on Friday night. The contest was the second game of the Atlantic Coast Conference/American Lacrosse Conference Challenge. Maryland beat Ohio State in the first game.
Carolina's Erica LaGrow scored an unassisted goal with 1:19 left in regulation to tie the score at 7-7 and force overtime. Neither team scored in the first overtime period.
The Tar Heels were led by Megan Bosica's one goal and one assist. Six other Carolna players scored one goal apiece, including LaGrow, Christina Juras, Jess Allen, Jenn Russell, Kelly Taylor and Meg Freshwater.
Kristen Hordy played all 66 minutes in goal for UNC, tallying five saves and allowing eight goals.
Carolina drew first blood, with Bosica scoring less than four minutes into the game. Penn State then answered right back, as Marisa Lozano got the Nittany Lions on the board with a goal at the 25 minute mark. Theresa Bucci scored a goal four minutes later, providing Penn State with its first lead of the game.
After another Tar Heel score by Allen tied the score, Mary LeNoir found net, giving Penn State a 3-2 lead. It would be the last time the Nittany Lions would be up until the three minute mark of the second half. Two more Carolina goals by Juras and Taylor put the visitors up 4-3 at halftime.
Jessi Lieb tallied the first of her two goals in the opening moments of the second half to tie the game at 4-4. North Carolina then scored two straight goals, a Russell score off a Bosica assist and an unassisted goal by Freshwater, to take their largest lead of the game. However the Penn State defense stiffened and held the Tar Heels scoreless for the next 20 minutes.
Penn State then went on a 3-0 run to take back the lead. Erica Mihm began the rally by netting a goal with 16 minutes left in the game. Shea then recorded her 17th goal of the season, forcing the game's fifth tie. Lieb followed with a free position score to give Penn State a 7-6 lead with three minutes and 32 seconds left in regulation.
Penn State was unable to hold on to the lead, as LaGrow scored the tying goal with just over a minute left. The Tar Heels had a chance to win it in regulation, but Jurkowsky came up with two key saves in the final 10 seconds and the game headed to overtime.
The teams played the first three minutes of overtime without a score. Penn State won the draw to start the second three-minute period, and would hold the ball for a late shot. Shea was fouled slashing to the net with 47 seconds left, and then buried the free position goal to give the game its final score.
The contest concluded day one of the ALC/ACC Challenge. Maryland and Ohio State met in the early game, with the Terrapins claiming victory, 19-12.
The Tar Heels will return to action in the ACC/ALC Challenge on Sunday at noon against Ohio State in State College, Pa.
