UNC Men's Golf Team Finishes Eighth At NCAA East Regional

Alpharetta, Ga. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team fired a second consecutive round of two-under-par 286 for an 877 total to finish in eighth place at the NCAA East Regional, played at The Golf Club of Georgia. The Tar Heels advance on to the NCAA Championship to be played May 30-June 2 in Williamsburg, Va.
"We play beautifully," said Carolina head coach John Inman. "We've had opportunities all spring and haven't really capitalized, and today we did. We're extremely excited to get back to Nationals. We've got some good rounds under our belt to give us momentum going into NCAAs."
Three Tar Heels posted top-20 finishes. Senior Martin Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, fired a two-under 70 in the final round to finish at one-under 215 in a tie for eighth place. Reed Darsie, a senior from Chapel Hill, tied for 17th place at two-over 218 after carding an even par 72 on Saturday. Sophomore David Holzwith, also from Chapel Hill, fired a one-under 71 to finish at three-over 219 in a tie for 19th place. Barden Berry, a junior from Kinston, N.C., posted a 73 in the final round for a 225 total to finish tied for 56th while sophomore Robert Riesen, from Pinehurst, N.C., shot 77 for a 232 total and tied for 100th place.
Top-ranked Georgia topped the 27-team field finishing with a nine-under 855 total after firing a seven-under 281 in the final round. Three teams were 12 strokes back deadlocked in a tie for second place with three-over 867 totals - Georgia Tech, Florida and Auburn. Florida State, which also fired a seven-under 281 on the last day, finished fifth at 873 while Duke was sixth at 874 and Charlotte was seventh at 875. Georgia State finished three stokes behind the Tar Heels in ninth place with an 880 while Coastal Carolina, which tied for 10th at 884, also qualified for the NCAA Championship by defeating Clemson in a four-hole playoff.
Billy Horschell of Florida and Brendon Todd of Georgia tied for individual medalist honors with six-under 210 totals. Horschel fired a four-under 68 in the final round while Todd carded a one-under 71. Georgia's Chris Kirk and Clemson's Kyle Stanley finished one stroke back with 211 totals in a tie for third place while Auurn's Patton Kizzire finished in fifth place with a 212 total and Auburn's Glenn Northcutt placed sixth at 213.
The 54-hole event was played at The Golf Club of Georgia, Lakeside Course, which features a par 72, 7,017-yard layout. The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on those 10 teams advance on to the NCAA Championship to be played May 30-June 2 at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club, Gold Course, in Williamsburg, Va. The two individual qualifiers were Kyle Stanley of Clemson and Zach Sucher of Alabama-Birmingham.
