Tar Heel Men's Golf Team Tied For 22nd At NCAA Championship

The University of North Carolina men's golf team fired a nine-over-par 289 in the first round of the NCAA Championship at Golden Horseshoe's Gold Course and is tied for 22nd place with Southern California. Stanford leads the field of 30 teams after firing a five-under-par 275.
Tar Heel senior Martin Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, fired an even par 70 and is tied for 29th place. David Holzworth, a senior from Chapel Hill, is one stroke behind Ureta at one-over 71 in a tie for 51st place. Three Tar Heels carded four-over 74 and are deadlocked in a tie for 107th - Robert Riesen, a sophomore from Pinehurst, N.C.; Reed Darsie, a senior from Chapel Hill and Barden Berry, a junior from Kinston, N.C.
Coastal Carolina is just two strokes behind Stanford in second place at 277. Three teams are deadlocked in third place with 278 totals - Florida, Minnesota and Texas. Charlotte is in sixth place with a 279 total while East Tennessee State is seventh at 280, Georgia is eighth at 282 and three teams are tied for ninth place with 283 totals - Florida State, Michigan State and UCLA.
Rob Grube of Stanford fired a six-under-par 64 to grab the individual lead. Tim McKenney of Florida is just one stroke back in second place with a 65 while four players are tied for third place at three-under 67 - Florida State's Matthew Savage, Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale, Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson and Minnesota's Bronson LaCassie.
The 72-hole event continues through Saturday at the Golden Horseshoe's Gold Course which features a par 70, 6,803-yard layout. After 54 holes the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and top six individuals not on those 15 teams. Complete results are available on TarHeelBlue.com and Golfstat.com.
