Tar Heel Men's Golf Team Tied For 19th At NCAA Championship

The University of North Carolina men's golf team fired a three-over-par 283 in the second round of the NCAA Championship for a 572 total and is tied for 19th place at Golden Horseshoe's Gold Course here. Stanford leads the field of 30 teams with a seven-under 553 total.
Carolina's Martin Ureta and Robert Riesen led the Tar Heels in the second round firing a three-under 67 and a two-under 68 respectively. Ureta, a senior from Santiago, Chile, is tied for eighth place at three-under 137 while Robert Riesen, a sophomore from Pinehurst, N.C., is tied for 44th place at two-over 142. Senior Reed Darsie, from Chapel Hill, carded an even par 70 for a 144 total and is tied for 76th place. Sopomore David Holzworth and junior Barden Berry both posted 78s on day two. Holzworth, also from Chapel Hill, has a 149 total and is tied for 126th while Berry stands tied for 144th with a 152 total.
Stanford held on to its first-round lead by firing a two-under-par 278 in the second round for its 553 total and is one stroke ahead of Minnesota which shot a four-under 276 for a six-under 554 total. Coastal Carolina is in third place at 558 after carding a one-over 281 on Thursday. East Tennessee State is in fourth place at 560 while Charlotte is fifth at 562, Georgia Tech and UCLA are tied for sixth place with 563 totals, and Oklahoma State and Texas are tied for eighth at 566.
Bronson LaCassie of Minnesota grabbed the individual lead by firing a five-under-par 65 for an eight-under 132 total. Jon Curran of Vanderbilt is two strokes back in second place with a 134 total after firing a six-under 64 in the second round. Four players are deadlocked in a tie for third place with 135 totals - Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson, Stanford's Rob Grube, UAB's Zach Sucher and Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale. Florida State's Matthew Savage is alone in seventh place at 137 while four players are tied for eighth place at three-under 137 - Carolina's Ureta, East Tennessee State's Gareth Shaw, Southern California's Tom Glissmeyer and Brigham Young's Daniel Summerhays.
The 72-hole event continues through Saturday at the Golden Horseshoe's Gold Course which features a par 70, 6,803-yard layout. After 54 holes the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and top six individuals not on those 15 teams. Complete results are available on TarHeelBlue.com and Golfstat.com.
