Tar Heel Men's Golf Team Ties For 21st At NCAA Championship

The University of North Carolina men's golf team fired its second consecutive round of three-over-par 283, but it was not enough to keep the Tar Heels around for the final round. Carolina posted a 15-over 855 total to finish in a tie for 21st place and missed the 54-hole cut of the top 15 teams by a mere four strokes. Stanford is atop the 30-team field with a 12-under 828 going into Saturday's final round at Golden Horseshoe's Gold Course here.
Carolina's Martin Ureta and Barden Berry led the Tar Heels in the third round. Ureta, a senior from Santiago, Chile, carded a one-under 69 for his third consecutive round of par or better and finished with a three-under 207 total to tie for 11th place. Ureta qualified for the final round as one of the top six individuals not on the top 15 teams. Berry, a junior from Kinston, N.C., fired a five-under-par 65, his low round this year, to finish with a 217 total and tied for 92nd place. Robert Riesen and Reed Darsie both carded four-over 74s on Friday. Riesen, a sophomore from Pinehurst, N.C., posted a 216 total to finish tied for 83rd while Darsie, a senior from Chapel Hill, finished at 218 to tie for 102nd place. Sophomore David Holzworth, also from Chapel Hill, carded a 75 for a 224 total and tied for 137th place.
Stanford fired a five-under-par 275 in the third round to hold on to the lead with a 12-under 828 total. Coastal Carolina fired an eight-under 272 on Friday for a 10-under 830 total, just two strokes behind The Cardinal. Charlotte and Alabama are tied for third place with a 838 totals as Alabama turned in the second lowest score of the day, a nine-under 271. Georgia was the team to turn in the low score of the day, a blazing 11-under 269, to finish in fifth place with an 840 total. Georgia Tech finished sixth at 843 while UCLA finished seventh at 846 and Minnesota and Florida tied for eighth place with 848 totals.
Duke and South Carolina tied for 10th place with 849 totals and Lamar and Texas tied for 12th at 850. Oklahoma State, Florida State and Tennessee were tied for 14th at 851 and had to fight it out in a playoff for the final two spots. Oklahoma State and Florida State prevailed defeating Tennessee in the playoff.
There is three-way tie for the top spot in the individual standings as Rob Grube of Stanford, Kyle Stanley of Clemson and Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech all have six-under 204 totals. Grube and Tringale both carded one-under 69s in the third round while Stanley fired a five-under 65. Four players are one stroke back in a tie for fourth place with 205 totals - Georgia Tech's Chesson Hadley, Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson, UAB's Zach Sucher and Brigham Young's Daniel Summerhays. A trio of players round out the top 10 with four-under 206 totals - Jon Curran of Vanderbilt, Zack Miller of Stanford and Matthew Savage of Florida State.
In addition to Carolina's Ureta, the other individuals qualifying for the final round are Clemson's Kyle Stanley, UAB's Zach Sucher, Brigham Young's Daniel Summerhays, Vanderbilt's Jon Curran and Southern California's Jamie Lovemark.
The final round of the 72-hole event will be played Saturday at the Golden Horseshoe's Gold Course which features a par 70, 6,803-yard layout. Complete results are available on TarHeelBlue.com and Golfstat.com.
