North Carolina Postgame Notes vs. Boston College
January 31, 2008
With the win tonight, North Carolina is 20-1. This is the 50th time in 98 seasons the Tar Heels have won 20 or more games, the fourth straight year with 20 or more and the 35th time in the last 38 years UNC has won 20 or more.
This is the 18th time in 20 years as a head coach that Roy Williams has led his teams to 20 or more wins. He had 19 in his first year at Kansas in 1988-89 and 19 in his first year at UNC in 2003-04.
Ty Lawson tied his career high for the second game in a row with 10 assists and had no turnovers. That is the most assists he has had in a game without a turnover - he had nine assists and no miscues last season against Rutgers.
Lawson also had 16 points, marking his second consecutive double-double in points and assists. He is the first Tar Heel to have double-doubles in points and assists in back-to-back games since Raymond Felton accomplished it against Maryland and Florida State in 2005.
This was the first time in his career Lawson had 10 or more assists in consecutive contests.
Lawson made a career-high eight free throws (previous was six).
This was the first game this year in which all five Tar Heel starters scored in double figures.
Deon Thompson scored a career-high 17 points (previous was 16 against NC State) and tied his career bests with four assists and three steals. He also made a career-best eight field goals (previous was seven three times).
Alex Stepheson set a career high with 11 rebounds (previous was nine).
Tyler Hansbrough had 18 points and six rebounds. He made four free throws to become only the second Tar Heel in history to make at least 600 in a career. He is two from tying Lennie Rosenbluth's alltime school record of 603.
Marcus Ginyard made a three-pointer for the third straight game, the first time he has done that in his collegiate career. He didn't many a single three in the first 18 games this year and has four in the last three.
Carolina shot 60.0 percent from the floor in the first half as it built a 16-point lead at the break. That was the Tar Heels' highest field goal percentage in a half against an ACC team this year and their highest since shooting 64.5 percent in the second half against Nevada on Dec. 27, 2007.
