Breland Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Jessica Breland shattered her career-high with 31 points on 14-of-18 shooting in the upset win at No. 2 Oklahoma, despite being guarded by OU All-America center Courtney Paris most of the night, and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for November 17-23, 2008. Breland also had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Kennesaw Stat, shooting 7 of 8 from the field with her lone miss on a breakaway dunk attempt. Breland was named MVP of the Preseason WNIT.

Sophomore Tyler Harris won three individual events, established two school records and swam four career bests during the 2008 Gamecock Invitational, leading the Tar Heels to a nearly 500-point victory over second place South Carolina. Harris began the meet by winning the 200-yard individual medley in a career best time of 1:46.54, an NCAA consideration time for the 2009 Championships. The time broke the school record of 1:47.33 set by John Davis 18 years ago. Harris then went 3:44.00, another career best, to win the 400-yard individual medley. He won the event by 15.04 seconds and he broke his own school record of 3:47.04 set at last year's NCAA Championships. Harris led off the 800-yard freestyle relay with a 1:38.56 split in the 200 free, taking 1.7 seconds off his previous career best of 1:40.26. Harris also won the 200-yard breaststroke in 1:58.33 which was 2.43 seconds better than his previous career best of 2:00.76. His time in the 200 breast moved him into second place all-time at UNC in the event behind only school record holder Sean Quinn's 1:56.39.

Junior Megan Steeves won four individual events and swam on three first-place relays and two second-place relays in leading North Carolina to a first-place finish in the Gamecock Invitational at Columbia, S.C. as the Tar Heels won the team title by a margin of 559 points over second-place South Carolina. In individual swims, Steeves won the 50 free in 23.24, the 100 free in 50.35, the 100 back in 55.32 and the 200 back in 1:58.62. She set her career best in the 200 back at 1:58.62, a career best 1:49.51 in the 200 free as the leadoff swimmer on the 800 free relay and a career best 50.19 in the 100 free as the leadoff swimmer on the 400 free relay. Steeves now has times which rank first in the ACC in the 100 free, third in the 200 free, fourth in the 50 free, third in the 100 back and second in the 200 back. With times from this meet, Steeves now ranks ninth in school history in the 100 free and fourth in the 200 backstroke.
