Carolina Women Place Seven In Championships Finals

ATLANTA, GA. - North Carolina women's swimming and diving team placed seven individuals in the championship finals and two in the consolation finals after the opening morning of preliminaries in the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center. One-meter diving preliminaries will not begin until 3 p.m. this afternoon.
Three Tar Heels made the Top 8 in the 500-yard freestyle led by freshman Katura Harvey who achieved the top seed in the finals with a career best 4:44.42. Her previous personal top time was 4:48.46 set in the dual meet against Virginia last month. Junior Whitney Sprague qualified third in 4:47.24 and sophomore Ashley Howard ranked seventh at 4:51.70. Howard knocked almost three seconds off her personal best which was 4:54.34. Freshman Ashley Miller placed 17th, missing the consolation final by one spot. But she swam her career best at 4:56.43 (previous was 4:57.30).
In the 200-yard individual medley, sophomore Alison Clemens qualified fifth in 2:01.92, sophomore Babara Thomas ranked 10th in 2:03.41 and junior Aubrette Biegel notched 14th in a career best 2:04.56. Biegel's previous best was 2:05.43 at 2007 Nike Cup.
The Tar Heels put three finalists in the Top 5 of the 50-yard freestyle in prelims. Senior Kelsey Morrissy was second in 22.67, freshman Rebecca Kane fourth in 22.87 and sophomore Megan Steeves fifth in 22.89. All were career bests. Morrissy had gone 22.96 at 2007 Nike Cup and Kane and Steeves carried career bests of 23.21 and 23.27, respectively, into this season.
UNC could add more finalists in women's three-meter diving at 3 p.m.

Katura Harvey is now second in school history in the 500 free at 4:44.42.
Kelsey Morrissy is now third in school history in the 50 free at 22.67.
Rebecca Kane is now sixth in school history in the 50 free at 22.87.
Megan Steeves is now seventh in school history in the 50 free at 22.89
