Tar Heels In Second After Day Two Of ACCs

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After five events on the men's side and seven on the women's the North Carolina track and field teams are both in second place after two days of competition at the 2008 ACC Indoor Championships being held in the Eddie Smith Field House. The multi-athletes scored 15 points for the men's team as Mateo Sossah (2nd), Daniel Keller (3rd) and Matthew Villemain (8th) all placed for the Tar Heels. The women's high jump was a point-producing event for Carolina as Ashley Haislip (T3rd), Patience Coleman (T3rd) and Alexandra Coppadge (8th) contributed a combined 10.5 points for Carolina. The stage is set for Saturday after the final heats for the track events were set on Friday.
The heptathlon got the day started as the trio of Mateo Sossah, Daniel Keller and Matthew Villemain contributed 15 points to the Heels' total with three solid finishes.
Sossah set another provisional mark as he finished with 5,454 points, less than 100 shy of his school-best mark set earlier in the year. Daniel Keller moved into third on the all-time list with 5,357 points and with that total found himself on the podium with a third place finish and another provisional mark. Matthew Villemain closed with a strong day on Friday and kept it going on Saturday as he finished in eighth place with a personal-best total of 4,892 points for the fourth-best total in school history.

Edward Baldwin III equaled a career-best on Friday with a long jump of 23-7.5 as he finished seventh in the event to give Carolina two more points. Austin Davis landed 22-0.75 from the line for an overall finish of 13th. On the women's side, LaToya James turned in a sixth place finish as she recorded a mark of 18-7.25. Chipping in another point on the women's side was Ashley Hill who finished eighth with a leap of 18-4.25. Erika Foushee placed 11th as she recorded a jump of 17-8.75.
The duo of Abby Kimball and Alison McGinnis both tied season-bests in the pole vault as Kimball cleared 11-11.75 for seventh place and McGinnis tallied a mark of 11-7.75 for 12th place on the day. In the women's high jump Carolina picked up 10.5 points as Ashley Haislip and Patience Coleman tied for third with jumps of 5-6.5 to garner five points apiece. Alexandra Coppadge set a new personal-best as she cleared 5-4.5 to tie for eighth and chip in a half point.
In the only track event to have a final on Friday, Addie Bracy turned in her best time as a Tar Heel in the 5,000 as she crossed the line in 16:29.19 for a fourth place finish. The time also set another provisional mark for Bracy, her second of the year. Brock Baker also picked up a personal-best on the men's side as he opened with a lead in the race before falling back to the pack as he battled for a 10th place finish.
The distance medley relay closed the day's events as the women took home seventh with a time of 11:49.42 and the men finished in sixth as the team of John Curtiss, Ian Williamson, Andrew Rotz and Alex Ray crossed the line in 10:05.40.
During the track preliminaries earlier in the day Carolina racked up 13 qualifiers, including a pair provisional marks and a pair of top qualifiers.
LaToya James and Vanneisha Ivy both turned in provisional marks in the 60-meter hurdles once again as James equaled her best time of the season with a mark of 8.32. Ivy was not far behind as she posted a time of 8.35 in her heat as she set a new season-best time.
Brie Felnagle finished fifth in the prelims for the mile run as she cruised around the track in a time of 4:57.36. The women's 400 will feature two Tar Heels in the final on Saturday as Callie Pottinger and Christine Johnson both qualified. Pottinger covered her two laps in 56.53, while Johnson barely edged her out with a time of 56.34. The pair will be matched up in the same section for the eight-woman final.
Freshman Charles Cox took the top spot in the men's 400 as he tackled the course in 47.76, just shy of a provisional mark as he did just a few weeks ago at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. In the men's 200, he finished with the third-best time of the day and his best of the season at 21.87.
Tyra Johnson turned in a very solid day in the sprints as she tied for second in the 60-meter dash prelims and also finished second in the 200. Johnson opened her day with a flight victory in the 60-meter dash as she clocked a time of 7.47, her best of the year and equal to her top mark at Carolina. She fell just shy of tying both her season-bests but still managed to finish second in the 200 with a time of 24.34.
Felnagle claimed the top spot in the 800 with a time of 2:09.18 and will look to repeat as the ACC Champion in the race on Saturday. Colleen Farly will join Felnagle in the race as she also qualifed for the eight-woman final with a time of 2:11.92. Adam Smith closed with a flurry during his flight of the men's 800 and qualified for the final in a time of 1:53.47.
North Carolina is currently second on the women's side with a point total of 32.50, less than 10 points behind the 2007 ACC Champion Virginia Tech which has 42 points. The men are in a tie for second with rival NC State at 30 points while the men's defending champion, Florida State, holds the top spot with 35 points.

Events will get underway at 11 a.m. in the Eddie Smith Field House on Saturday with the trials of the shot put and triple jump getting things started.
