CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Donte Nall joined teammate Walter Henning as an ACC Champion on Saturday as he cleared 6-10.25 in the high jump to push the men's team to a fourth place finish. The women were led by Tyra Johnson and Brie Felnagle who both earned two All-ACC honors en route to Carolina's tie for second place with Florida State. The Tar Heels will now have a week to prepare for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
oth teams entered the day in second place and Brie Felnagle kept her team in that position with a solid showing in the opening running event of the day, the mile. Felnagle posted a time of 4:37.67 for third in the race and her second automatic qualifying time of the year. The Tacoma, Wash. native's time was the second-best in school history behind only Shalane Flanagan's mark of 4:37.41 in 2001.
Felnagle would earn her second All-ACC honor later in the day in the 800 as she posted a time of 2:13.39 to give her team eight more points. Dominique Jackson and Colleen Farley also chipped in nine points of their own as Jackson finished fourth in the race with a mark of 2:13.73 and Farley was right behind her at 2:14.17.
The tandem of LaToya James and Vanneisha Ivy both turned in season-bests in the 60-meter hurdles with James taking sixth (6.31) and Ivy finishing in seventh (8.34). Christine Johnson and Callie Pottinger both scored for Carolina in the 400 as Johnson edged out her teammate for sixth place in a time of 56.04, while Pottinger took seventh with a mark of 56.26. Cox tackled his two laps in 47.81 after running a 47.77 in the prelims on Friday. The freshman would earn his second All-ACC honor later in the day as he finished third in the 200 with a time of 21.72.
Senior Tyra Johnson turned in a personal-best performance on Saturday as she finished third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.47. Johnson turned in another personal-best mark in the 200 when she earned her second All-ACC honor with a second-place showing in a time of 24.16.
Adam Smith picked up three points for the Heels in the men's 800 as he clocked a time of 1:54.51. Donte Nall was the story of the field events on Saturday as he took the top spot in the high jump and also finished fifth in the triple jump. Nall was unable to equal his season-best of 7-0.25, but that did not stop him from claiming his first ACC title as he cleared 6-10.25 in his only his second jump of the day. Nall then moved to the triple jump where he recorded a mark of 48-8.25 which was good enough to finish fifth behind teammate Austin Davis. The triple jumping freshman posted a personal-best on Saturday and the second-best leap in school history as he landed 51-9.25 in his first jump of the day. Davis' jump gave Carolina eight more points as he finished second in the event.
Mateo Sossah and Matthew Villemain also were in the high jump on Saturday after both picked up impressive point totals in the heptathlon portion. Sossah finished eighth on the day as he cleared 6-6.25 and Villemain took home 13th with a jump of 6-4.25. In the triple jump Erika Foushee and Gabby Gioia finished back-to-back with Foushee claiming 12th with a mark of 37-5 and Gioia finishing 13th at 37.2.25.
The tie for second place by the women's team insured the 22nd consecutive year that Carolina would be in the top three at the indoor championships. The Tar Heels finished with 88.50 points which was equal to Florida State's total. The Tar Heel men also extended the streak under head coach Dennis Craddock to 22 years of finishing in the top five at the indoor ACCs.
