Sossah Sets Meet Record On Day One Of NCAAs

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - On day one of the NCAA Indoor Championships Mateo Sossah did something that no other heptathlete had done at the Championships when he cleared 2.08m (6-9.75) in the high jump to set a new meet record. Sossah currently sits in ninth place after four events of the heptathlon which will conclude on Saturday. Patience Coleman earned the Carolina women's team 1.50 points when she finished seventh in the high jump. Action will conclude in Fayetteville, Ark. on Saturday
Sossah opened the day with the 60-meter dash where he finished 16th in a time of 7.48 which awarded him 719 points. The sophomore added to his point total in the second event, the long jump, when he cleared 6.89m (22-7.25) for 788 points and ninth place among his competitors.
Sossah seemed to keep improving event-by-event as he finished fifth in the shot put when he tallied a throw of 13.50m (44-3.50) which added 698 points to his total. Sossah closed his day with an impressive showing in the high jump where he set a new meet record. He cleared 2.08m (6-9.75) and shot up the heptathlon rankings as a result with 878 points. Sossah currently sits in ninth place with 3,083 points with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000-meter run scheduled for Saturday.
Patience Coleman was the first Tar Heel to score on the weekend when she posted a high jump mark of 1.80m (5-10.75) to tie for seventh. The seventh place finish garnered Carolina 1.50 points for the team total.
Addie Bracy was also in action for the Tar Heels on Friday as she raced in the 5000. The senior finished in a time of 16:41.46 which placed her 15th in the event.
The Carolina women are currently tied for 37th overall after one day of action, while the men did not have anyone compete in a final. Austin Davis will be competing in the triple jump on Saturday along with fellow freshman Walter Henning battling for the national title in the weight throw. On the women's side, Brie Felnagle will look for her fourth career national championship when she races in the 3000-meter run.
