No. 2 UNC Earns Top Seed In New Orleans Region

INDIANAPOLIS --- No. 2 North Carolina earned a No. 1 seed for the fourth consecutive season and the fifth time in school history when the field for the 2008 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship was announced by the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee Monday night. The Tar Heels will open play in Norfolk, Va., on Sunday, March 23 at noon against 16th-seeded Bucknell, the champion of the Patriot League. The Tar Heels and Bison have never met.
Joining UNC as No. 1 seeds are Connecticut, Tennessee and conference rival Maryland. Third-seeded Duke, fourth-seeded Virginia, 10th-seeded Georgia Tech and 11th-seeded Florida State also earned at-large bids from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The winner of Sunday's UNC-Bucknell first-round game will face the winner of eighth-seeded Georgia and ninth-seeded Iowa on Tuesday for a spot in the regional semifinals in New Orleans. Also participating in the New Orleans region are No. 2 seed LSU, No. 3 seed Oklahoma State, No. 4 seed Louisville, No. 5 seed Kansas State, No. 6 seed Ohio State, No. 7 seed Marist, No. 10 seed DePaul, No. 11 seed Florida State, No. 12 seed Chattanooga, No. 13 seed Miami (Ohio), No. 14 seed East Tennessee State and No. 15 seed Jackson State.
Carolina played a total of 13 NCAA Tournament teams a total of 17 times during the 2007-08 regular season. Carolina had a record of 15-2 in these games, with losses coming at No. 1 seeds Connecticut and Tennessee. UNC owns victories over the following tournament teams: No. 1 Maryland, No. 3 Duke, No. 4 Virginia, No. 6 Arizona State, No. 7 Syracuse, No. 9 Purdue, No. 10 Georgia Tech, No. 10 Western Kentucky, No. 11 Florida State, No. 12 Liberty and No. 16 Coppin State.
