Lawson Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Sophomore guard Ty Lawson scored 40 points and handed out 11 assist without committing a turnover in two NCAA Tournament wins and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for March 17-23, 2008. Lawson had 21 points and four assists in a 113-74 first round win over Mount St. Mary's and 19 points and seven assists in the second round in a 108-77 victory over Arkansas.

Sophomore Clay Donato went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles as North Carolina ran its winning streak to eight straight matches with win over No. 29 Wake Forest 4-3 and at No. 7 Florida State 4-3, UNC's ninth successive win over the Seminoles in Tallahassee dating back to 1992. Donato combined with Stefan Hardy to clinch the doubles point against Wake Forest and then won his singles match in straight sets against the Demon Deacons' Carlos Salmon. In UNC's upset win over the Seminoles on Friday, Donato provided the clinching singles point to break the 3-3 tie and give the Tar Heels a 4-3. Donato rallied from a set down at #4 singles to beat Maciek Sykut, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Sprague finished as the 2008 NCAA runner-up in the 1650-yard freestyle at the NCAA Women's Swimming Championships last Saturday. Sprague's time of 15:57.77 was the third fastest of her career as the Tar Heels finished in a tie for 32nd place in the team standings. It was Sprague's second successive Top 3 finish in the 1650-yard freestyle at the NCAA Championships as she finished in third place at last year's meet.
CHAD FLACK

Third baseman Chad Flack led Carolina with a .579 average (11-19) in a 4-1 week for the third-ranked Tar Heels. Seven of his 11 hits were for extra bases, including five doubles and a pair of home runs. He also added eight runs scored and drove in eight runs, while slugging 1.158 for the week. Flack tallied four straight multi-hit games to close the week, including a pair of three-hit efforts against Maryland. In Sunday's series finale, Flack went 3-for-6 with two doubles, a grand slam and five RBI. Flack entered the week with a .203 average but raised it to .284 with three home runs, 17 RBI and nine doubles. With the 11 hits over the last five games, Flack moved into fourth on the Tar Heels' career list with 277 base hits.

Contributed to eight of Carolina's 16 goals in a 16-14 win over No. 5 Duke on Saturday in Chapel Hill, scoring four goals and dishing out four assists ... Also tallied four ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers as the Tar Heels improved to 7-2 this season, 1-1 in the ACC ... Bosica contributed three first-half goals and four first-half assists, then added a goal during an early second-half rally during which the Tar Heels built a five-goal lead.
