CHAPEL HILL - The University of Maryland women's lacrosse team got four goals and one assist from senior Kelly Kasper and won its 10th consecutive game, 10-8, over North Carolina on Saturday night at Fetzer Field. With the win, Maryland improved to 12-1, 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina falls to 10-4, ending its conference season at 2-3 in the ACC.
The loss spoiled Senior Night for UNC, as the contest was the final regular season home appearances for Tar Heel seniors Amanda Barnes, Meg Freshwater, Jamie Hanssen, Erica LaGrow, Julia Ryan and Britta Williams.
"It was a pretty even game on the stat sheet," said Carolina head coach Jenny Levy after the game, "but we needed to take advantage of our opportunities better to get a win. We had some scoring opportunities, especially in the first half, that we didn't capitalize on very well. We did some nice things but unfortunately we were playing from behind tonight."
Kasper led all scorers with her five points. Other Terrapin scorers included Lauren Cohen (two goals and two assists), Caitlyn McFadden (one goal and one assist), Sarah Mollison (one goal and one assist) and Dana Dobbie and Katie Princiotto (one goal each).
Krissten Taylor led the Tar Heels with two goals and one assist. Chelsea Parks and Corey Donohoe each scored twice for UNC, Kelly Taylor had a goal and an assist, Freshwater had one goal and Jenn Russell and Ryan had one assist each.
In the first half, Maryland's McFadden scored the game's first goal just 2:14 into the game on a free position attempt, quickly making it 1-0 Maryland. Four and a half minutes later, Kasper fought through several Tar Heel defenders to score a tough, unassisted goal from five meters in front of the goal, making it 2-0, Maryland at 23:12.
Donohoe responded 30 seconds later with a quick shot off a Kristen Taylor assist, pulling the Tar Heels within 2-1 at the 22:39 mark of the first half. Cohen scored an unassisted goal at 18:35, slicing right down the middle to beat UNC keeper Amanda Barnes and make the score 3-1 Terps. Just 13 seconds later, Kapser scored on a give-and-go pass from Sarah Mollison to make it 4-1.
UNC's Freshwater cut the lead to 4-2 with 12:01 left before halftime, taking the ball from midfield all the way to score unassisted down the middle. Maryland made it 5-2 on a goal by Dobbie, who grabbed the rebound of a Cohen shot and put it into the net from point-blank range with 6:48 left in the half. Parks scored unassisted on a pretty spin move to cut the Terrapin lead to 5-3 with 5:13 left before the break. Kelly Taylor scored a minute later from almost 12 meters away, hitting the corner of the cage with a low shot to make it 5-4 Maryland.
Maryland made it 6-4 with 2:36 left when Princiotto scored off a pass from Cohen. Princiotto was falling to the ground in front of the cage as she received the pass from Cohen but still was able to slip it past Barnes into the net.
Kasper got the scoring started in the second half at the 27:23 mark, making a pretty fake and spin move behind the net to slip a defender and score unassisted to make it 7-4. Kristen Taylor scored off a pass from her sister, Kelly Taylor, cutting through the defense on a give-and-go play with 16:31 left to cut the Terp lead to 7-5.
Kasper scored her fourth goal of the night on a jump shot off a pass from Cohen, putting the Terrapins back ahead by three goals with 14:44 left to play. Kristen Taylor scored with 9:44 left to cut the lead to 8-6, taking a pass from Jenn Russell off a free position attempt and scoring from the left of the cage. Kasper set up the next Terp goal less than a minute later, racing down the field off a loose ball and dishing to Cohen, who slipped it in the net to the right of Barnes to make it 9-6. Mollison added an insurance goal with 2:31 left, taking a pass from McFadden and scoring from directly in front of the net and giving Maryland a 10-6 advantage.
Parks scored a free position goal with 1:08 left to make it 10-7 Terps. Donohoe scored with 46 seconds left to cut it to 10-8, taking a pass from Ryan on a free position setup and scoring from the left. Time soon ran out for Carolina, however.
The start of the game was delayed by 35 minutes due to a late-running track meet at Fetzer Field. The track meet was delayed due to heavy rain in Chapel Hill during the afternoon.
Carolina will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at Old Dominion. UNC will close its 2008 regular season next Sunday at three-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern. The ACC Tournament begins on April 24 in Charlottesville, Va.
