Pair Of Wins Put Tar Heel Men In First At ACCs; Women Sixth

ATLANTA - Freshmen Walter Henning and Brian Moore helped fuel the North Carolina men's track and field team to 26 points on the opening day of the ACC Championships. Henning captured the hammer throw, while Moore took the javelin title. The women's team is in sixth place after the opening day.
Henning opened the day in fine fashio as he picked up his second ACC title of his freshman campaign when he tallied a throw of 225-05 en route to winning by nearly 10 feet. The throw ranks second in school history and is the third-longest throw to date in the country.
Brian Moore added another ACC title for the Carolina freshmen class when he claimed the top spot in the javelin throw with a toss of 213-10. Joining Moore in the javelin were Erek Latzka and Brian Doran who helped add to Carolina's point total. Latzka tallied five points with a fourth-place finish as he recorded a throw of 202-01. Doran chipped in with an eighth-place finish as he tossed the javelin 178-00 to earn a point. Another Tar Heel, Ian Reynolds, nearly scored as well when he finished ninth with a throw of 175-07.
In other men's action, Brock Baker and Zack Dawson competed in the 10000 meter run on Friday with Baker taking home 11th (32:02.82) and Dawson claiming 14th (32:39.49). Matthew Villemain was in action on Friday as the decathlon got under way. Villemain currently sits in fourth place with 3,405 points after the opening five events. The big event for the sophomore was the high jump where he scored 785 points as he cleared 6-6. He added 773 points in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.91 to close out the day. Villemain opened 717 points in the 100-meter dash (11.67) along with 632 points with a long jump of 6.21m.
On the women's side, Amanda Nappi and Gabby Gioia tallied six points for the Tar Heels in the javelin throw with Nappi taking home fourth and Gioia claiming eighth. Nappi recorded a throw of 140-11 for the five points, while Gioia threw the javelin 130-06 for the other point. In other women's action, Jocelyn White fell just shy of scoring in the hammer throw as she finished ninth with a toss of 169-10. Norjai Palma finished 15th in the hammer throw as she recorded a throw of 150-03.
Gioia also competed in the opening four events of the heptathlon along with Alexandra Coppadge on Friday. Coppadge currently sits in third place with 3,287 points, less than 100 shy of first place. Coppadge opened the day with 957 points with a 14.15 showing in the 100-meter hurdles. Coppadge closed with 887 points in the 200-meter dash as she posted a time of 25.00. In between, Coppadge added 806 points in the high jump (5-5.25) and another 637 in the shot put (38-2). Gioia is holding down seventh place after day one as she posted a point total of 2,976. The freshman tallied 917 points in the 100-meter hurdles (14.44) and followed with 771 in the high jump (5-4.25). Gioia closed with 776 points in the 200-meter dash (26.24) after posting 512 points in the shot put (31-11.50).
Lauren Holesh closed out the day on a high note for the Tar Heels as she finished fifth in the 10000 with a time of 35:24.30. Holesh's four points bumped Carolina's day one total to 10 as the Tar Heels are sitting in sixth place.
