Tar Heel Golfers Finish The Second Round at the NCAA West Regional Tied For 16th Place

BREMERTON, WASH. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team dropped to a tie for 16th place after the second round of the NCAA West Regional. After posting a seven-over-par 295 total in the first round, the Tar Heels dropped 11 strokes for a second round team total of 601.
The West regional is being contested at the Gold Mountain Golf Club's Olympic Course, a par 72, 7,111-yard layout.
"We struggled today," said Carolina head coach John Inman. "We played mediocre golf. We need to play a good round tomorrow in order to make it to the finals."
Junior Tar Heel Chase MacFarland, from Savannah, Ga., continues to lead Carolina in scoring with a two day total of 148 and is tied for 35th place. One stroke behind MacFarland at 149 and tied for 52nd place is senior Reed Darsie, from Chapel Hill. Freshmam Henry Zaytoun III, from Raleigh, shot a six-over-par 78 for a 151 total and is tied for 65th while Kinston native Barden Berry along with teammate Kevin O'Connell from Cary, N.C., have 156 totals and are tied for 104th.
Southern California leads the field of 27 teams at two-under-par, 574. The University of Oregon and Clemson University occupy second and third with two day totals of 579 and 580, respectively. UCLA and Washington round out the top five.
Joey Benedetti of Oregon has yet to relinquish his hold on first place on the player leader board after firing another three-under-par 69, for a six-under-par 138 going into Saturday's round. One stroke behind Benedetti at five-under-par is Wisconsin's Dan Woltman, followed by Nick Taylor of the University of Washington at four-under 140. Michael McRae of Saint Mary(Ca) is in fourth place at 141 while Rory Hie of Southern California clings to the fifth position at two-under 142. Six players are tied for sixth place with 143 totals.
The 54-hole event continues through Saturday. Live scoring throughout the tournament is available on Golfstat.com. The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on those 10 teams advance on to the NCAA Championship to be played May 28-31 at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, Kampen Course, in West Lafayette, Ind.
