PINEHURST, N.C. - University of North Carolina golfers Barden Berry and Kevin O'Connell lost in the first round of match play at the 108th U.S. Amateur played at Pinehurst's No. 2 course. Berry, from Kinston, N.C., lost to Connor McHenry, 2&1 while O'Connell, from Cary, N.C., lost to Brian Harman, 1 up.

McHenry then went 2 up on hole #16 and held that lead through hole #17 when McHenry clinched the match.
O'Connell, the 2008 ACC Freshman of the Year, either led or the match was all square through the 15th hole. Harman, a senior at Georgia, squared the match at hole #12 and grabbed the lead at the 16th hole where he carded a birdie. O'Connell and Harman both parred the 17th and 18th holes with Harman taking the win.
Jack Fields, an incoming freshman from Southern Pines, N.C., was one of 26 players in a playoff for the two remaining spots on Wednesday morning following the 36 holes of stroke play. Fields failed to qualify for one of those last two spots.
The prestigious event continues through Sunday when a champion will be crowned following a 36-hole final match. All of match play will take play at Pinehurst No. 2 which features a par 70, 7,281-yard layout.
