Traveling to Washington, D.C. to face EAGL rivals Rutgers and host George Washington, as well as ECAC members Cornell, Temple, and William & Mary, the UNC gymnastics team is excited to begin their second competition of the of the 2009 season. The six-team competition is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 16 in the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center.
"We are looking forward to competing at George Washington University," said head coach Derek Galvin. "Since we've got back from Cancun, the team has been training with a focus on improving our execution and developing more consistency on our landings and our bar handstands. Training has been going well, so we are looking forward to our first regular season meet. Cancun was a great experience, but now we are ready to get the normal season underway and start building our competitive experience as a team, getting ready for meets at the end of the season."
The Tar Heels will begin the meet on bars for their first rotation.
"We expect to have cleaner execution than we did in our first meet in Cancun and we look towards this meet as an opportunity to see a couple of our EAGL opponents, George Washington University and Rutgers, both of whom we'll see in the EAGL Championships this year," said Galvin. "So, it's a good opportunity to see where we stand in comparison to those teams, as well as the other teams that are in the competition. It's going to be a busy weekend in Washington, D.C.; the competition at GW on Friday night and all the events for the upcoming Inauguration during the weekend. We're excited about going up there and we're looking forward to a strong team performance."
