The UNC Men's Golf Team 13th at Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate

The University of North Carolina men's golf team fired an 11-over 299 and is in 13th place after the first round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges.
Tar Heel sophomore Jack Fields and freshman Michael McGowan, both from Southern Pines, N.C., led the Carolina contingent as both fired a one-under-par 71 and are tied for eighth place. Fields' round was highlighted by an eagle 3 on the par-5 eighth hole. Philip Chauncey, a junior from Durham, N.C., fired a four-over 76 and is tied for 53rd place in his first start this year. Juniors Henry Zaytoun III and Kevin O'Connell struggled on the Friday. Zaytoun, from Raleigh, N.C., carded an 81 and is tied for 77th place while O'Connell, from Cary, N.C., shot 84 and is 80th.
Oregon State leads the field of 15 teams after firing a two-under-par 286. Tennessee and Missouri are one stroke back tied for second place at one-under 287. Five teams are deadlocked at two-over 290 - Virginia Tech, Duke, Virginia, Wake Forest and UNC Wilmington.
Daniel Valasquez of Oregon State grabbed the individual lead by firing a six-under-par 66 in the first round. Daniel Meggs of Wake Forest and Wes Roach of Duke are one stroke back in second place at four-under 68. Josh Brock of UNC Wilmington is alone in fourth place at three-under 69 while a trio of players is tied for fifth place at two-under 70 - Drew Ernst of Coastal Carolina, Ben Kohles of Virginia and Justin Walker of Tennessee. Ten players are tied for eighth place at one-under 71, including Carolina's Fields and McGowan.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday and is being played at The Ridges Golf and Country Club which features a par 72, 7,147-yard layout.
