Tar Heel Men's Lacrosse Team Stays Active In the Community

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse program continued its strong commitment to community service during the fall semester of 2009. The Tar Heel team participated in several projects during the course of the fall. Team members are currently involved with Adopt-A-Family programs during the holiday season and they will be working with the UNC Burn Center/UNC Children's Hospital to adopt a child during the spring semester 2010.
Here is a summary of the projects undertaken during the fall semester of 2009.
Projects Already Completed:
2nd and 7 Foundation -
Team members read books to kids at local elementary schools. The players who were active in this service project were Jimmy Dunster, Sean Burke, Thomas Wood, Chris Hunt, Logan Corey, Joe Howard, Gavin Petracca, Milton Lyles, Gray Smith, Mark Staines and William Scroggs.
Ice Cream Cart at UNC Hospitals -
Four team members met with representatives of Health and Food Services at UNC Children's Hospital and then visit patients' rooms on the top three floors of the hospital. Players visited with each patient, offering ice cream bars, other frozen treats and most importantly engaging the young patients in conversation. Team members who worked with the project included Milton Lyles, Logan Corey, Tyler Morton and James Petracca.
The team made a cash donation to the Eve Carson Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund was established to honor the memory of former student body president Eve Carson who was slain in the spring of 2008.
Lacrosse Clinics
Players who volunteered their services to work at the following lacrosse clinics were Charlie McComas, William Leighton-Armah, Jeff Muscatello, Marcus Holman, Logan Corey, Chris Hunt, Sean Taylor, Ed Prevost, Sean DeLaney, Billy Bitter, Thomas Wood, Jimmy Dunster, Milton Lyles, Matt Conte, James Petracca and Ryan Flanagan.
September 19th at Chapel Hill High School (Chapel Hill, N.C.) Players helped out with Chapel Hill's youth program "Rivals Lacrosse". Lower and Middle school age kids were the clinic participants.
October 31st at Durham Academy (Durham, N.C.) Team members helped out with Durham's youth program, "Fusion Lacrosse." Middle School aged kids were involved and it was their "play day" which is the last day of the fall season.
November 7th at Forsyth Country Day School (Winston-Salem, N.C.) Squad members worked with the Lower and Middle School kids in morning session and then High School kids in the afternoon session. Was conducted as part of Jamie DeBole's (UNC lacrosse 2005-08) "Lacrosse Turf" program.
November 21st at Kerr-Vance Academy (Henderson, N.C.) The school is trying to bring back a lacrosse program, so Carolina players went out and put on some shooting demonstrations and ran some drills. Middle School and High School age kids participated. The event was coordinated with former UNC assistant coach Pat Olmert, Class of '89. Players participating included William Leighton-Armah, Ed Prevost, Chris Hunt, Ryan Flanagan, Jimmy Dunster, Milton Lyles, Thomas Wood and James Petracca.
The lacrosse team is currently active in the following activities:
The team has adoptedtwo families for the holiday season. UNC lacrosse players will collect money and buy gifts and deliver them to these two needy families in the Triangle Area. Adopting family #1 are Michael Burns, Mark Staines, Gray Smith, Zander Walters, Stephen Burns. Adopting family #2 are Joe Howard, Sean Jackson, Chris Layne, Ian Braddish, William Scroggs.
UNC Burn Center/UNC Hospitals: The team is adopting a child for the spring season from the UNC Burn Center/UNC Children's Hospital and will have him or her be active in team affairs. The student-athletes who have volunteered to work with the project over the next six months are Ryan Flanagan, Chris Hunt, Charlie McComas, Jimmy Dunster, William Leighton-Armah, Marcus Holman, Michael Jarvis and Sean DeLaney.
