Carolina Notes vs. Maryland
Feb. 3, 2009
Carolina has won 20 games for the 51st time in 99 seasons, the fifth time in the last six years under Coach Williams and the 36th time in the last 39 years.
This is the 19th time in Roy Williams's 21 years as a head coach that his teams have won 20 plus games.
Carolina hit 16 three-pointers, which equals the second-most in a game in school history (17 vs. Florida State on Jan. 17, 1995, and 16 vs. North Carolina A&T on Dec. 27, 2001).
The 11 made three-pointers in the first half ties the UNC record for a half and is the most ever in a FIRST half. UNC also made 11 in the second half at Maryland on Jan. 10, 1990.
Carolina made 11 of 15 threes in the first half (73.3 percent) and 16 of 25 for the game (64.0 percent). The previous highest percentage for a game this year was 53.8 vs. Kentucky (7 for 13).
Carolina had three players score 20-plus points (Wayne Ellington 34, Tyler Hansbrough 24, Ty Lawson 21) for the first time since the Georgia Tech game in the ACC Tournament on March 12, 2004 (Sean May 27, Rashad McCants 25, Raymond Felton 20).
Wayne Ellington scored 34 points, his second-highest game as a Tar Heel (36 vs. Clemson on Jan. 6, 2008). It was his second career 30-point game.
Ellington tied his career high with seven three-pointers (also had seven against Miami on Jan. 17).
Ellington also had a career-high nine rebounds (seven on the offensive end). His previous high was eight on six occasions.
Danny Green hit four three-pointers and has made 11 three-pointers in the last three games. Green also blocked three shots for the fourth time in the last six games.
Tyler Hansbrough set an ACC record by scoring 20 plus points for the 71st time (broke a tie with Duke's JJ Redick).
Hansbrough also set a UNC record by scoring in double figures in his 119th game (Sam Perkins, 118).
Hansbrough moved into second place in ACC history in career scoring behind JJ Redick. Hansbrough now has 2,572 points. He passed NC State's Rodney Monroe (2551) and Duke's Johnny Dawkins (2556) tonight. He trails Redick by 197 points for the ACC mark.
Hansbrough also passed Oscar Robertson to move into third place in NCAA history in free throws made. Hansbrough was 9 for 10 from the line tonight and has made 876 in his career. Roberston had 869. Pete Maravich is second with 893 and Wake's Dickie Hemric is first with 905.
Ty Lawson scored 21 points, his 10th career 20-point game (second time at home). He had six assists and no turnovers - the fourth time this year he had at least six assists and no turnovers in a game.
Carolina scored 108 points, the second-most points by the Tar Heels against the Terps (record was 109 in 2004-05).
The 60 points in the first half was an ACC high for any half by UNC this year (50 twice).
Carolina shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the first half and 53.6 in the second. That marks the third and fourth straight half in which the Tar Heels have shot 50 or better (and fifth and sixth in the last eight halves).
Maryland shot 55.6 percent in the first half, the highest percentage in a half against UNC this year (Wake Forest 53.6 in the second half).
