
Felnagle, Ivy Move On At NCAA Indoor Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The North Carolina track and field teams opened competition at the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas on Friday with strong showings by Daniel Keller, Vanneisha Ivy, Brie Felnagle and the women's DMR team. The women's DMR team claimed eight team points for Carolina as the group ran a 10:56.19, smashing the school record. Felnagle and Ivy each finished in the top five of their respective events to move on to Saturday's finals. Action resumes at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday.
The group of Ashley Verplank, Elizabeth Mott, Callie Pottinger and Brie Felnagle claimed a second place finish earning All-America honors, while setting a new school standard in the DMR. The time was nearly three seconds faster than the 2007 national champion squad that Felnagle appeared on as a sophomore. Tennessee claimed the title with a world-record setting time of 10:50.98.
Felnagle posted the second-fastest time in mile run prelims on Friday as she clocked a 4:41.08, finishing second in her heat. The senior entered the weekend with a top time of 4:32.17 in the event. Felnagle will look for her fourth career national title at 5 p.m. CT in the mile final on Saturday.
Ivy will be battling for a national title as well on Saturday as she claimed one of the eight spots in the 60-meter hurdles final. The junior punched her ticket as she matched her personal best in the event when she ran an 8.16 in the prelims. Ivy will take to the track not long after Felnagle as the event is scheduled to begin at 5:20 p.m. CT.
Keller currently sits in 13th place in the heptathlon after the opening day of the seven event competition. The High Point, N.C., native posted 739 points in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.42 before scoring 790 points with a jump of 22-7 3/4 in the long jump. A shot put throw of 44-1 1/4 added 694, before closing out the day with a high jump mark of 6-6 1/4 for 794 more points. Keller posted 2,223 points through the first four events of the competition.
Austin Davis will be in action on Saturday as he takes part in the men's triple jump, while the women's 4x400-meter relay team will close out the competition and the indoor season.
