Carolina's All-America forward Tyler Hansbrough is a semifinalist for the 2008 James E. Sullivan Award presented by the Amateur Athletic Union. Tar Heel fans are encouraged to go online and vote for Hansbrough at www.aausullivan.org.
Known as the "Oscar" of sports awards, and older than the Heisman Trophy, the AAU Sullivan Award honors the outstanding amateur athlete in the United States. The Sullivan Award has been presented annually since 1930 as a salute to James E. Sullivan, founder and past president of the Amateur Athletic Union and a pioneer in amateur sports. Based on the qualities of leadership, character, sportsmanship, and the ideals of amateurism, the AAU Sullivan Award goes far beyond athletic accomplishments and honors those who have shown strong moral character.
The award will be presented on April 15th at the New York Athletic Club. This prestigious award honors the outstanding amateur athlete for 2008 based on athletic accomplishments, leadership skills, character and sportsmanship.
Online voting is now open and will close March 27, 2009. Please visit www.aausullivan.org and vote for Tyler Hansbrough for the 2008 AAU Sullivan Award.
