Tar Heels Tied at 16th in Opening Round of Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational

STATESBORO, GA. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team returned to action this weekend at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational. But the Tar Heels struggled during the first day of play, ending 14 over par and tied for 16th with the University of Iowa. The University of Tennessee is in first place at one under par.
Kevin O'Connell, a sophomore out of Cary, N.C., finished the day tied for 18th with a par-72. O'Connell struggled with three bogeys initially, but recovered by making three birdies in his last five holes. Sophomore Henry Zaytoun III, of Raleigh, N.C., shot a three-over to tie for 45th. Southern Pines, N.C., freshman spark Jack Fields finished the day four strokes over par, giving him a tie for 60th. Senior Robert Riesen and junior Chase MacFarland both tied for 85th shooting seven over.
The University of Tennessee ended the day leading the pack with a one-under 287. Behind Tennessee stands the University of North Florida in second at two-over par, followed by host team Georgia Southern and South Carolina tied for third with three-over par.
On the individuals' side of the tournament, four are tied for the lead at three-under 69: Glenn Northcutt of Auburn, Robin Wingardh of Tennessee, Sang Yi of LSU, and Taylor Floyd of Augusta State.
The tournament continues play through Sunday at the Forest Heights Country Club, which features a par-72, 6,962-yard course.
