General Notes
- Tonight's Sweet 16 game was the first meeting between North Carolina and Gonzaga in the NCAA Tournament and just the second meeting overall (Nov. 22, 2006 - No. 23 Gonzaga 82, No. 2 North Carolina 74). The all-time series is now tied at 1-1.
- North Carolina has advanced to the Sweet 16 an NCAA record 23 times. UNC has an all-time record of 23-7 in NCAA Tournament regional semifinal games, including a 17-6 mark since 1975.
- UNC has reached the Sweet 16 21 times in its last 27 NCAA Tournament appearances.
- Carolina has now won nine consecutive games in the regional semifinals, last losing in the Sweet 16 in 1992 to Ohio State.
- Carolina is now 99-39 (.717) all time in the NCAA Tournament, while Gonzaga falls to 14-12 (.538).
- UNC's 99 NCAA Tournament wins are a new all-time record (Kentucky, 98).
- UNC improves to 11-2 in NCAA Tournament play in the last three seasons and 18-4 in the tournament under head coach Roy Williams, advancing to four regional finals, two Final Fours and winning the 2005 National Championship.
- Mark Few and Roy Williams are the two active winningest coaches in NCAA Division I. Williams is now 591-138 (.811), while Few is 264-66 (.800). They are the only two active coaches above .800.
- Key run - Gonzaga had cut the UNC lead to 68-57 with 12:35 left to play in the game, before Carolina went on a 12-0 run highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers by Bobby Frasor and back-to-back a three-point plays by Wayne Ellington and Tyler Hansbrough. UNC would eventually stretch its lead to 28 points at the 3:58 mark in the second half.
North Carolina Notes
- North Carolina will be appearing in the Elite Eight for the third consecutive year.
- UNC improves to 31-4 on the year. The team has reached the 30-win plateau for three consecutive seasons and 10 times overall.
- UNC has won 30 games in three straight seasons for the first time ever.
- Tyler Hansbrough finished with a game-high 24 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. It was his 11th double-double this season and the 46th of his career. He has led UNC in scoring 18 times this season and 88 times in his career.
- Hansbrough has led UNC in rebounding 18 times in his career and 87 times in his career.
- Hansbrough now has 2,828 career points to extend his UNC and ACC career scoring mark. The 2,282 points are 14th all-time on the NCAA Division I scoring chart. He needs just six more points to pass Otis Birdsong (Houston 1974-77, 2,832) and move into 13th place and just 24 points to pass Larry Bird (Indiana State 1976-79, 2,850) and move into 12th place.
- Hansbrough's 24 points marked his 29th 20-plus point game this season and the 78th of his career. He has scored in double figures 28 times this season and 131 times in his career.
- UNC had four players register double figures (Hansbrough 24, Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington 19 and Danny Green 13).
- Ty Lawson dished out a game-high nine assists, the 30th time he has led UNC in assists this season and the 79th time in his career.
- Carolina held a 17-10 advantage in points off turnovers, a 13-4 edge in second chance points and a 19-8 advantage in fast break points. For the season, the Tar Heels hold a 582-391 advantage in second chance points against all of its opponents and they hold a 672-411 lead in points off turnovers against all of their opponents this season.
- The Tar Heels improved to 9-1 in neutral site games this season.
Gonzaga Notes
- Gonzaga was meeting a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time.
- The Bulldogs were making their 11th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and 12th overall.
- This was Gonzaga's fifth trip to the Sweet 16, all under head coach Mark Few. It is the first time the Bulldogs have been a No. 4 seed.
- The 11-straight NCAA appearances are tied for fifth for consecutive NCAA appearances.
- The Bulldogs finished the season 28-6, the second most wins in a single season in program history.
- Gonzaga had four players register double figures in the loss: Jeremy Pargo 16, Josh Heytvelt 14, Micah Downs 12 and Austin Daye 10.
- Austin Daye led Gonzaga with 11 rebounds, all on the defensive end. It was his fifth double-double of the season and sixth of his career.
- Daye's 11 rebounds were one off his season and career high (12 vs. Montana State-Billings in Portland - 2/5/09).
