Tar Heels Finish 10th at River Landing

Wallace, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina men's golf team finished in 10th place at the River Landing Intercollegiate. UNC finished with a 20-over-par 884 total. On Saturday the Tar Heels were led by Kevin O'Connell's impressive four-under-par round. Henry Zaytoun III continued to play consistently, shooting his third one-over-par round of the tournament. Host North Carolina State University had a dominant lead over the field of 14 teams for two rounds, but faced a formidable opponent in the Duke team. The Blue Devils captured the team title with an eight-under-par final round. Duke finished with a 14-under-par 850 total.
O'Connell's 68 in the final round put him in a tie for 19th place with a one-over-par 217 total for the tournament. Zaytoun finished in a tie for 31st place at three-over par.
Freshman Jack Fields and senior Robert Riesen finished in a tie for 60th place. Fields fired a four-over 76 in the third round. Riesen was six-over par on Saturday. Both Fields and Riesen finished the tournament with an 11-over-par 227 total.
Philip Chauncey, a sophomore from Durham, carded a nine-over-par 79 in the third round. Chauncey finished the tournament 21-over-par and in 80th place. Golfing unattached, Chase MacFarland recorded a two-over-par round on Saturday. MacFarland finished in a tie for 65th place with a nine-over-par 225 total.
NC State finished six strokes behind Duke for second place and Wake Forest took third. Michigan finished in fourth and Virginia Tech placed fifth.
NC State's Matt Hill captured the individual title. Hill carded a 10-under-par 206 total. Duke's Matthew Pierce finished in second at six-under par. Maryland's John Popeck and Michigan's Alexander Sitompul tied for third at five-under par. The tournament was played in Wallace, N.C. at the River Landing Country Club, which features a par-72, 6,942-yard layout.
The Tar Heels return to action next weekend, April 17-19, at the ACC Championship. The ACC Championship will be played in New London, N.C.
