Tar Heels Down Stanford, 13-10, To Close Regular Season

Chapel Hill - Sixth-ranked North Carolina got five goals and an assist from Kristen Taylor and defeated No. 15 Stanford, 13-10, on Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. The game marked the final regular season home game for Tar Heel seniors Katie Brooks, Jocelyn Brault, Meghan Clarke, Amber Falcone, Chelsea Parks, Kelly Taylor and Caitlyn Young.
In addition to Kristen Taylor's scoring output, Carolina got two goals and an assist from Jenn Russell and a goal and an assist from Megan Bosica. Laura Zimmerman, Corey Donohoe, Kelly Taylor, Parks and Brooks scored single goals for UNC and Becky Lynch added an assist.
Stanford got two goals and an assist from Lauren Schmidt and two goals each from Karen Nesbitt, Jamie Nesbitt and Sarah Flynn. Leslie Foard and Amanda Schwab had single goals for the Cardinal.
With the win, Carolina improves to 13-3 this season. Stanford, which beat Davidson, 19-4, on Friday night, falls to 10-4. The victory, coupled with Friday night's win at Duke, gives the Tar Heels 10 wins in their last 11 outings. The only UNC loss since March 6 came on April 11 at Maryland.
Carolina jumped out to a quick, 3-0 lead. Donohoe scored on a free position attempt at the 27:48 mark and Kristen Taylor followed with a goal off a pass from Lynch at 25:15. Brooks made it 3-0 with a free position goal less than 30 seconds later at the 24:49 mark.
Stanford fought back with a goal from Schmidt off a pass from Hubbard and a free position goal from Flynn in less than a minute. Kristen Taylor scored on a free position attempt to make it 4-2 UNC with 19:47 left in the first half. A goal by Foard off an assist from Schmidt cut the lead to 4-3 and forced a Carolina timeout. Jamie Nesbitt followed with a free position goal with 12:21 left before the break to tie the score at 4-4.
Kristen Taylor scored off a pass from Russell off a free position try with 11:20 left in the half, and Russell's free position goal with 10:11 to go made the score 6-4 Tar Heels. Stanford cut it to 6-5 on a free position goal by Schwab before Parks took a pass from Kristen Taylor after lining up for a free position try and scored to make the score 7-5 UNC at the break.
In the second half, Stanford scored back-to-back free position goals in the first 1:12 of action, getting goals from Schmidt and Karen Nesbitt to tie the score at 7-7. A free position goal from Kelly Taylor made it 8-7 Tar Heels before Karen Nesbitt responded by streaking down the middle of the field for an unassisted goal to tie it at eight apiece with 27:47 left in the game.
Russell made it 9-8 Tar Heels with 21:31 left by driving down the middle, avoiding a defender and scoring from eight meters out unassisted. Kristen Taylor's spin move and unassisted goal with 20:35 to go made the lead 10-8 UNC and forced a Stanford timeout. Nine minutes later, Jamie Nesbitt scored on an unassisted drive down the middle to cut the Tar Heel lead to 10-9 with 11:43 to go.
Kristen Taylor scored her fifth goal to make the score 11-9, taking a pass from Bosica and putting the ball in the cage for a two-goal advantage. Bosica scored an unassisted goal with 7:21 to make it 12-9, driving into the center from the left corner and scoring from seven meters. Zimmerman scored an insurance goal with 4:11 left to make the score 13-9. Flynn scored off a pass from Dana Lindsay with no time left on the clock to end the game at 13-10 Carolina.
Logan Ripley went the distance in the cage for UNC, recording nine saves. Annie Read had seven saves and allowed 13 goals in the cage for the Cardinal.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Friday in the semifinals of the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in Blacksburg, Va. Carolina will face the winner of the game between No. 3 seed Duke and No. 6 seed Boston College.
