Tar Heels Fall To Duke In ACC Semifinals

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The third-seeded Duke Blue Devils took a 14-4 win over second-seeded North Carolina in the semifinals of the ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship on Friday at Virginia Tech's Thompson Field. The Blue Devils will advance to Sunday's Championship Game to face the top-seeded and second-ranked Maryland Terrapins.
The fourth-ranked Blue Devils improve to 13-4 with the win while the fifth-ranked Tar Heels drop to 13-4. The 10-goal margin of victory was the largest for Duke in series history.
With the win, Duke earns back a half-point in the standings for the 2008-09 Carlyle Cup, the annual multisport competition between UNC and the Blue Devils. Carolina has already clinched the 2009 Carlyle Cup despite Friday's outcome, which comes after the Tar Heels beat Duke last Friday night in the regular season.
Duke didn't waste any time opening the scoring with a goal after only 19 seconds. Carolyn Davis scored the unassisted goal and went on to score two additional goals in the first nine minutes. Davis finished the game with four tallies. Carolyn Cryer scored twice more and Duke took a 5-0 lead after only 12 minutes.
The Tar Heels answered with three goals over the next six minutes to cut the margin to 6-3. Corey Donohoe recorded the first two while Becky Lynch scored at 12:50. Duke responded with three more goals to close out the first period. At halftime, the scoreboard read 9-3 to the Blue Devils.
The second period went in favor of Duke as Megan Del Monte scored three goals and the Blue Devils outscored the Tar Heels 5-1 over the final 30 minutes to take the 14-4 final score.
Kim Imbesi took the win between the pipes for Duke, making 12 saves to improve to 12-4 on the season. North Carolina's Logan Ripley took the loss in goal, making 11 saves and falling to 13-4.
The 2009 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship continues on Sunday with the Championship game. Maryland will face Duke on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast along the league's regional sports network partners.
