Carolina Finishes Third At Big 4 Challenge

DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina men's golf team defeated Duke 3 and 2 to finish third at the Big 4 Challenge at Treyburn Country Club, a par 72, 7,070-yard layout. NC State claimed the Big 4 Championship with a 3 and 2 win over Wake Forest.
Carolina finished third in the morning stroke play portion of the event with a 382 total. NC State posted the low team score of 369 while Wake Forest was second at 378 and Duke finished a stroke behind the Tar Heels in fourth place at 383. The stroke play round was played in a 5 count 5 format with all five team members counting towards the team score. Standard format is a 5 count 4.
Tar Heel sophomore Henry Zaytoun III and freshman Jack Fields fired one-over-par 73 in the stroke play portion of the event. Zaytoun, from Raleigh, N.C., and Fields, from Southern Pines, N.C., tied for third place. Kevin O'Connell, a sophomore from Cary, N.C., carded a 74 to finish in seventh place while Philip Chauncey, a sophomore from Durham, shot 76 to tie for 13th and Chase MacFarland, a junior from Savannah, Ga., shot an 86 to finish 20th.
Matt Hill of NC State shot a two-under 70 to win stroke play individual medalist honors. He edged out Wolfpack teammate Brad Revell who finished two strokes back at even-par 72. Duke's Adam Long and Wake Forest's Dustin Groves finished in a tie with Carolina's Zaytoun and Fields at 73.
Carolina received match play wins from Zaytoun, Fields and Chauncey. Zaytoun topped Duke's Wes Roach 4 and 3 while Fields defeated Blue Devil Clark Klaasen 2 and 1. Chauncey captured a 1 up win in 21 holes over Matthew Pierce of Duke to give the Tar Heels the 3 and 2 win. Chauncey sank an 18-foot birdie putt on the 21st hole to close the match. Pierce posted wins on No. 17 and No. 18 to send the match into extra holes. Earlier, Carolina's O'Connell lost to Duke's Adam Long, 4 and 3 while Blue Devil Michael Quagliano defeated Carolina's MacFarland, 2 and 1.
Hill and Revell each posted 3 and 2 wins in the match play to help guide NC State to the team title. Darren Blair also posted a win for the Wolfpack with a 1 up win in 20 holes over Wake Forest's Brendan Gielow. Lee Bedford and Dustin Meggs posted 1 up wins in 19 holes for Wake Forest.
O'Connell now heads to Galloway, N.J., to play in the NCAA East Regional. O'Connell received an individual bid to the 54-hole event which will be played Thursday through Saturday at Galloway National Golf Club.
