CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Contests against the 2010 NCAA finalists will highlight an eight-game home schedule for the 2011 University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team which was announced by UNC head coach Joe Breschi Friday. The Tar Heels will also compete in the Konica Minolta Big City Classic at the Meadowlands for the third straight year as well as making road trips to ACC rivals Maryland and Virginia.
"I think it is one of the toughest schedules we've played in a while," says Breschi. "It will be a grind but it is the type of grueling schedule that hopefully will prepare our young guys down the road, gaining valuable experience for playing better lacrosse in April and May.
"I think we have a great home schedule with eight games in Chapel Hill. It will be exciting for our fans to see us host both teams who competed in the 2010 NCAA championship game at Fetzer Field this coming season."
Carolina will open its regular season on February 12 when Robert Morris visits Chapel Hill for a 2:30 p.m. It will be the second time in the past three years the two teams have met in the season opener at Fetzer Field. After visiting Ohio State, where Breschi coached from 1998-2008, on February 19, Carolina will host three successive games against Navy, UMBC and Pennsylvania.
The latter two games kick off a busy March for the Heels as they travel to defending Ivy League champion Princeton on March 12 before hosting 2010 NCAA champion Duke under the lights at Fetzer Field on Friday, March 18. A home game with Dartmouth and a trip to Maryland finish out the month.
UNC will compete in the Konica Minolta Big City Classic for the third successive year on Sunday, April 3 at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The opponent this year will be Johns Hopkins. The Tar Heels played Virginia there each of the past two seasons.
UNC will travel to Virginia on April 9 for a game under the lights, the first time that rivalry will be played on campus since 2008. A home game with Presbyterian and a trip to Lehigh follow before the Tar Heels compete in the 2011 ACC Tournament at Duke's Koskinen Stadium with the semifinals on April 22 and the championship game on April 24.
The regular season's final matchup will be a big one as UNC hosts 2010 NCAA finalist Notre Dame at Fetzer Field on Friday, May 6 at 7 p.m.
