Carolina Claims UNCG Bridgestone Title

The University of North Carolina men's golf team carded a 3-under 285 in the final round to win the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate with a 31-under 833 total. Michael McGowan converted 18 birdies over three rounds to lead the Tar Heels with a 13-under 203 total and third-place finish overall. Each member of the North Carolina team finished in the top 20.
"We got off to a hot start and held on all day," said Tar Heel head coach John Inman. "I told them to just stay patient and keep making birdies. That's what they did the first two rounds and they did a good job of doing it again today."
McGowan, a sophomore from Southern Pines, N.C., fired a 6-under 66 in the third round, matching the low round of his collegiate career for the second consecutive day. Fellow native of Southern Pines, N.C., junior Jack Fields, carded a1-over 73 on the final day en route to a 6-under 210 total and tie for eighth. Henry Zaytoun III, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., also finished in a tie for eighth with a 6-under 210total. Kevin O'Connell, a senior from Cary, N.C. and Clark Palmer, a sophomore from Augusta, Ga., finished tied for 19th as both finished the tournament with a 1-under 215 total. Junior Matt Raudenbash from Pine Valley, N.J. participated in the tournament as an individual and carded a 5-over 221 total.
Carolina took the lead in round two with a 20-under 268 total, the lowest round in school history and held on for the win as they carded a 3-under 285 in the final round, finishing with a 31-under 833 total. No. 9 Auburn tallied an8-under 285 on Sunday to finish with a 24-under 840 total and in second place. Virginia Tech finished third after carding a 3-under 285 in the final round and 22-under 842 overall. The University of Michigan began the day in second place, only one stroke behind the Tar Heels. After scoring a 1-over 289 in the final round, the Wolverines fell to fourth place with a 21-under 843 total. Northwestern carded a 2-under 286 on Sunday, ending with an 11-under 853 total and in sole possession of fifth.
Auburn's Blayne Boyer and David Lipsky of Northwestern both finished with a 14-under 202 total, sharing the individual title. Boyer and Lipsky saved their best rounds for last as they fired a 7-under 65 and 6-under 66, respectively, in round three. McGowan finished insole possession of third with a 13-under 203 total. Auburn's Michael Hebert and Virginia Tech's Mike Moyers each tallied 10-under 206 totals to round out the top five.
The 54-hole event was played in Greensboro, N.C. at the Forest Oaks Country Club, which features a par 72, 7197-yard layout. The UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate concludes the fall portion of the Tar Heels' schedule.
