TULSA, Okla.- Jose Hernandez made a strong showing at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Tennis Championships at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., advancing to the third round.
Hernandez won his first two matches Thursday, comfortably defeating qualifier Peter Lucassen of Southern California, 6-3, 6-3, before ousting Tulsa's Marcelo Arevalo 6-4, 7-6(1). Arevalo had earlier provided the upset of the tournament when he beat No. 1 seed John-Patrick Smith in the first round.
Hernandez faced off Friday against No. 12 Sanam Singh in the third round, taking the first set 6-3 before losing the next two 4-6, 3-6. Virginia has three players competing in the quarterfinals, including Singh, Drew Courtney and freshman Alex Domijan, who was responsible for another shock result when he dominated Duke's Henrique Cunha (ranked No. 2 nationally) 6-2, 6-1.
Brennan Boyajian, who fought his way through qualifying earlier this week, lost in the first round to the No. 9 seed, Florida's Alexandre Lacroix. After dispatching Boyajian 6-3, 6-4, Lacroix won his next two matches to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals.
