Nashville, Tenn. ------ The University of North Carolina football team and staff arrived in Nashville, Tenn., throughout the day Sunday to begin preparations for the 2010 Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl on Thursday, Dec. 30.
Weather issues on the east coast forced some players to arrive later than expected, but most were on site at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel for a team meeting at 6:30 p.m. ET. The team then headed downtown for a dinner and function at the Wildhorse Saloon.
"First and foremost was the safe arrival of our players and staff," said head coach Butch Davis. "Despite the inclement weather that delayed and cancelled flights, nearly everyone was able to arrive on time. Our kids had a good break for the holidays and are anxious to get back on the football field Monday to begin practicing for Tennessee."
Two players - safety Curtis Campbell and wide receiver Mark McNeill - were scheduled to arrive Monday after their flights were cancelled coming out of the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area on Sunday.
Senior tailback Anthony Elzy also did not travel with the Tar Heels to Nashville and will not compete in the bowl game after failing to meet his obligations as a student-athlete at UNC.
Elzy started the final three regular-season games at tailback in place of Johnny White and produced 531 all-purpose yards (176.7 avg.) in games vs. Virginia Tech, NC State and Duke. He had a career-high 118 yards rushing in his final game at Duke and had a career-high 178 yards receiving vs. NC State.
Carolina will practice Monday at 12:15 p.m. at Father Ryan High School. The Tar Heels will face Tennessee on Thursday at 6:40 p.m. at LP Field.
