Bitter Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Men's lacrosse attackman Billy Bitter had a season-high four goals as fourth-ranked UNC defeated ninth-ranked Duke, 13-7, to earn Tar Heel of the Week honors for March 8-14, 2010. The win broke a 15-game ACC regular-season losing streak for UNC and it also broke an 11-game losing streak to Duke. The junior from Stowe, Vermont, scored two first half goals to stake the Tar Heels to a 5-3 lead at intermission. Then, after Duke had tied the game at 6-6 with four minutes left in the third quarter, UNC scored four straight goals in a span of 3:27 to take a 10-6 lead with one second left in the third period. Bitter assisted on the first and third goals of the scoring streak that put the game away while scoring the second and fourth goals of the same scoring run, both in an unassisted manner.

Mateo Sossah was runner-up in the heptathlon at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships for his point total of 5,886. This personal best mark broke the UNC school record he previously set at the 2010 ACC Indoor Championships and ties the French national record for athletes 23 and under. His second place finish tabbed eight points for Carolina at nationals, helping them tie for 20th, their best finish since 2002. Sossah is the now only Tar Heel multi to ever win two second-place finishes in both the indoor and outdoor seasons and is one of two Carolina men's multis to earn All-America status for both seasons.

Sophomore Jack Fields tied for third place at the Seminole Intercollegiate. Fields fired an even par 213 total, just one stroke behind first place. He fired a five-under-par 66 in the first round followed by an even par 71 in the second and a five-over 76 in the final round. The 54-hole event was played at Southwood Golf Club which features a par 71, 7,143-yard layout. The Tar Heels tied for seventh place in the team race.

Junior Sarah Thead tied for 15th place at the LSU Tiger/Wave Classic by firing an eight-over-par 224 total. Thead carded four-over 76 in the first and final rounds with an even par 72 in the second round. The 54-hole event was place at English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans which features a par 72, 6,132-yard layout. The Tar Heels finished eighth in the team standings.
BRIAN GOODWIN

Brian Goodwin led Carolina to two victories this week posting a .474 average (9-19) and .684 slugging percentage. The freshman currently owns a 11-game hit streak through 16 games this year. Goodwin went 4-for-4 with 5 RBI in Friday's 21-9 win over rival Duke. The Rocky Mount, N.C., native reached base six times Friday drawing two walks and falling a triple shy of the cycle.

Clay Donato led UNC to its fourth straight win to improve to 9-2 and Carolina posted its fourth win away from home over a ranked opponent in six road matches, losing only to a pair of Top 10 teams, Georgia and Ohio State. Donato combined with Stefan Hardy to help the Heels clinch the doubles point with an 8-5 upset win over 51st-ranked Michael Nuesslein and Christian Saravia of Rice 8-5. Donato, ranked 49 in singles, crushed 25th-rated Bruno Rosa in singles to be the first man off the court. Donato pulled off the near bagel, whipping Rosa 6-1, 6-0.

Lynch scored a career-high four goals and had two assists for a career-high six points in Carolina's 13-12 overtime loss at No. 8 Virginia on Saturday afternoon. The sophomore attacker also controlled a draw in the back-and-forth loss to the Cavaliers that dropped the Tar Heels to 6-1 thus far this season, 0-1 in ACC play.
