WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior LaToya James and sophomore Malai Walker led the Tar Heels at the Wake Forest Open by taking three individual wins between them as the University of North Carolina track and field program eased into the outdoor season.
James won both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. James had already won the prelims for the 100 hurdles on Friday afternoon, and she continued that streak on Saturday. She ran that distance in 13.72. For the 400 hurdles, James ran in 58.07.
Walker won the 100 dash by almost two-tenths of a second at 12.08. She was joined in that race by teammate Zoey Russell who took home fourth place in 12.35, a new personal record.
Walker and Russell also competed with four other sprinters from the women's squad in the 200. Walker placed second overall in 24.24 followed by Elizabeth Mott in sixth in 24.58. Tyler Ford (24.84), Russell (24.90), Michelle Newman (26.06) and Briana Hudson (27.01) also competed but did not place in the top-10.
The women's 4x100-meter relay finished in second place in 46.08. Walker, Christine Johnson, Chrishawn Williams and Ford made up the legs for that relay. In the 4x400 relay, Johnson, Mott, Tasha Stanley and Callie Pottinger took home first for their time of 3:46.66. That time was nearly five seconds faster than the remainder of the field.
In women's field events, Newman and Hudson leaped the long jump. They both reached 17-6 3/4 for a 12-13 placing overall.
On the men's side, Kelvin Hardesty took home sixth in the 100 dash. After qualifying for the final on Friday where he was third overall, Hardesty ran in 10.69.
Charles Cox finished third overall in the 200 in 21.31. Kenith Roseman and Austin Davis also ran the 200 in 23.28 and 23.73, respectively.
Roseman also competed in the long jump where he placed fifth. He reached a length of 23-6. In the 400-meter hurdles, Reynaldo Radlin and Kenneth Andoll did not place. Radlin finished at 57.89 and Andoll at 1:00.66. As a correction to men's field events, on Friday, Brian Doran competed in the javelin and threw 173-8.
The men's 4x400 relay team, consisting of Ian Williamson, Hardesty, Radlin and Rick Goettel, placed fifth in 3:17.37.
The Carolina track teams will split up next weekend to take on the Raleigh Relays and the Stanford Invitational. Those two-day meets will last from Friday, March 26th, through Saturday, March 27th.
