New London, N.C. -
Despite posting a four-under-par 284 in the second round of the ACC Men's Golf Championships, the University of North Carolina remains in 10th place heading into Sunday's final round. Sophomore Jack Fields led the Tar Heels, who are now five-over par through two rounds. With a 581 total Carolina is 26 strokes behind tournament-leader Georgia Tech, but only two shots back from a trio of teams tied for seventh.
"We had a better day today." said Tar Heel head coach John Inman. "Once again, we got off to a slow start, but had a nice back nine. It was good to see us get it going. It could have been better, but you never turn your nose up at an under-par round on this course."
Fields, a native of Southern Pines, N.C. fired a two-under-par 70 in second round action and now sits in a tie for 20th place with a one-under-par 143. Sophomore Kevin O'Connell will enter the third round in a tie for 26th place after he recorded a one-under-par 71 on Saturday. O'Connell, a native of Cary, N.C., is one-over par for the weekend with a 145.
Junior Henry Zaytoun III, a Raleigh, N.C. native, sunk four birdies in the back nine and recorded a one-under-par 71 to finish Saturday in a tie for 29th place with a two-over-par 146. Freshman Michael McGowan, who was in a tie for 49th place after the first round, posted an even-par round on Saturday to remain at five-over par. McGowan, a native of Southern Pines, N.C., is now in a tie for 39th place. Chase MacFarland, a senior from Savannah, Ga., struggled Saturday and fell from 39th place to 54th place after he shot a nine-over-par 81. MacFarland is 12-over-par after two rounds of play.
Georgia Tech refused to relinquish the top spot in the eleven-team field and recorded a 12-under-par 276 to sit at 21-shots under par through two rounds. Duke took control of second place with a six-under par 282. With a team total 562, the Blue Devils are one stroke ahead of third place Wake Forest. Virginia is fourth at 566.
Georgia Tech's Chesson Hadley and NC State's Matt Hill are tied for first place at nine-under par. Hadley fired a six-under-par 66 to catch Hill and surpass Duke's Adam Long. Long is in third place at eight-under par. Virginia's Will Collins and Wake Forest's Brendan Gielow are tied for fourth place at seven-under par.
The tournament will continue Sunday, April 25 at Old North State Club in New London, N.C. The course features a par 72, 7,102-yard layout.
One Carlyle Cup point will be awarded to either Carolina or Duke, whichever finishes higher, in the ACC Championship. The Carlyle Cup is an all-sport competition between the two schools. Carolina currently leads Duke 14.5-10.5 after the Blue Devils finished higher than the Tar Heels in the ACC Women's Rowing Championships. The results and breakdown can be found at TarHeelBlue.com. Duke currently leads Carolina by 19 strokes in men's golf.
