Tar Heel Golfers Finish Second At River Landing Intercollegiate

The North Carolina men's golf team fired a four-under-par 284 in the final round of the River Landing Intercollegiate, but it wasn't quite enough. Co-host UNC Wilmington fired a six-under 282 and the Seahasks' 17-under 847 total edged out the Carolina's 15-under 849 total. Four Tar Heels carded top-11 finishes led by junior Henry Zaytoun III who placed third.
Zaytoun, from Raleigh, N.C., fired a one-under 71 in the final round for a six-under-par 210 total, just three strokes behind the individual medalist. Sophomore Jack Fields had the low round of the day for the Tar Heels firing a four-under 68. The Southern Pines, N.C., native tied for fourth place at five-under 211. Senior Chase MacFarland and freshman Michael McGowan tied for 11th place with two-under 214 totals. MacFarland, from Savannah, Ga., fired an even par 72 on Saturday while McGowan, from Southern Pines, carded a one-over 73. Junior Kevin O'Connell, from Cary, N.C., posted a three-over 75 for an eight-over 224 total to tie for 46th place.
With UNC Wilmington and Carolina tied going into the final round, the Seahawks finished atop the 13-team field at 17-under 847, just two strokes ahead of the Carolina's 15-under 849. Co-host East Carolina finished 10 strokes behind the Tar Heels with a five-under 859 total. Wofford finished fourth at three-under 861 while Maryland and VCU tied for fifth with two-over 866 totals.
David Watkins of East Carolina grabbed the individual title by firing a five-under-par 67 in the final round for a nine-under 207 total. Josh Brock of UNC Wilmington, the leader going into the final round, finished just one stroke back at eight-under 208 after posting a two-under 70 on Saturday. Carolina's Zaytoun finished third at six-under 210 while teammate Fields and Wofford's Ben Wright tied for fourth place with five-under 211 totals.
The 54-hole event was played at River Landing's River Course which features a par 72, 6,900-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action April 9-10 at the Wolfpack Invitational in Raleigh, N.C.
