Tar Heel Golfers 12th At NCAA Regionals

BRYAN, TEXAS -
The North Carolina men's golf team carded a 13-over-par 301 in the first round of the NCAA South Central Regional and stands in 13th place heading into the second round at the Traditions Club. Freshman Michael McGowan led the Tar Heels firing a two-over 74 on Thursday.
McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., is tied for 39th place going into Friday's second round. Henry Zaytoun III, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., fired a three-over 75 and stands tied for 48th. Junior Kevin O'Connell, from Cary, N.C., and sophomore Jack Fields, from Southern Pines, both carded a four-over 76 on Thursday and are tied for 53rd place. Chase MacFarland, a senior from Savannah, Ga., shot 82 and stands tied for 69th.
Host Texas A&M and Texan Christian lead the field of 14 teams by firing 11-under 277 totals. North Florida is three strokes back in third place at eight-under 280. Texas Tech is fourth at 282 while Wichita State is fifth at 283, Pepperdine is sixth at 286 and Auburn is seventh at 288. At the conclusion of the three-round event, the top five teams and the top individual (not on those five teams) advance on to the NCAA Championships to be played June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Four players are tied for the individual lead at six-under-par 66 - Texas A&M's Ignacio Elvira, TCU's Daniel Jennevret, North Florida's Kevin Phelan and Wichita State's Dustin Garza. Nils Floren of Texas Tech is alone in fifth place two strokes back at four-under 68. Four more players are tied for sixth place at three-under 69 - Texas Tech's Finley Ewing IV, TCU's Travis Woolf, Baylor's Ryan O'Rear and Auburn's Cole Moreland.
The 54-hole event continues through Saturday and is being played at the Traditions Golf Club which features a par 72, 7,146-yard layout. The Tar Heels begin teeing off Friday at 8:50 a.m. CDT. Live scoring is available in TarHeelBlue.com or Golfstat.com.
