Five Carolina Golfers In Match Play At North And South Amateur

Five Carolina golfers, including two former players, will open match play on Wednesday at the 110th North and South Amateur being played at Pinehurst #2 which features a par 71, 7,350-yard layout. Barden Berry, Jack Fields, Michael McGowan, Robert Riesen and Henry Zaytoun III will be among the 64 match play participants.
Fields and McGowan, both from nearby Southern Pines, were exempt into match play and thus did not have to play in Tuesday's qualifying round. Fields, a rising junior at Carolina, will play Barden Berry, a former Tar Heel who played on the 2005-2008 teams, will tee off at 8:10 Wednesday morning. Berry fired a one-over 72 in Tuesday's qualifying round to tie for 15th place. McGowan, a rising sophomore at Carolina, is paired against Logan Harrell, from Huntersville, N.C., at 9:22. Zaytoun, a rising senior from Raleigh, fired a three-under-par 68 in Tuesday's qualifier to tie for second place, just one stroke behind medalist Joseph Juszczyk of Dearborn Heights, Mich., who carded a 67. Zaytoun and David Constable, a rising senior at Minnesota, will meet in match play at 9:46 on Wednesday. Robert Riesen, who was a member of the 2006-2009 Tar Heel golf teams, carded a two-over 73 in the qualifying round to tie for 26th and will be matched against Bhavik Patel, a rising sophomore at Fresno State, at 9:22 on Wednesday.
Other Tar Heels who played in Tuesday's qualifier, but failed to advance to match play are Philip Chauncey, Patrick Barrett and Kevin O'Connell. Chauncey, a rising senior from Durham, fired a two-over 74 and tied for 32nd place. Barrett, a rising junior from Pinehurst, carded a 75 to tie for 41st while O'Connell, a rising junior from Cary, shot 77 to tie for 63rd.
Match play in the prestigious event continues through Saturday at Pinehurst #2. After Wednesday's first round of match play, the second and third rounds will be played Thursday, the quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be Friday and the 36-hole final match will be played Saturday.
