Two Carolina Golfers Advance At North & South Amateur

PINEHURST, N.C. -
University of North Carolina golfers Jack Fields and Robert Riesen advanced to the second round of match play at the 110th North and South Amateur being played at Pinehurst #2 which features a par 71, 7,350-yard layout.
Fields, a rising junior from nearby Southern Pines, defeated former Tar Heel teammate Barden Berry, from Kinston, in 19 holes. Berry, who played on the 2005-2008 golf teams, led most of match, but Fields tied the match on the 15th hole with a birdie-2. The match remained all square through regulation with Fields winning on the 19th hole. Riesen advanced without having to make a putt as his first-round opponent, Bhavik Patel, a rising sophomore at Fresno State, did not show up for the scheduled 9:22 tee time.
Henry Zaytoun III, a rising senior from Raleigh, N.C., lost in Wednesday's first round to David Constable, 2 and 1. Constable, a rising senior from Minnesota, birdied the 15th and 16th holes for his two-stroke advantage. Zaytoun's Tar Heel teammate, Michael McGowan, a rising sophomore from nearby Southern Pines, also lost his first round match to Logan Harrell, from Huntersville, N.C., 1 up. The match was all square going into the 18th hole where McGowan suffered a bogey-5 and Harrell carded a par-4.
Fields will now face Josh Eure, from Crofton, Md., in Thursday's second-round match at 7:54 a.m. Riesen goes up against Joseph Bramlett, a native of Satatoga, Calif. who just completed his collegiate career at Stanford at 8:18.
Match play in the prestigious event continues through Saturday at Pinehurst #2. The second and third rounds will be played Thursday, the quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be Friday and the 36-hole final match will be played Saturday.
