CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
Glenn Heer, a native of High Point, N.C., lost his lifelong battle with an immunodeficiency disorder in Bethesda, Md., on Wednesday, July 14. He was 19 years old.
"Glenn was a great Tar Heel," says Tar Heel head coach John Inman. "He loved everything UNC and despite his many medical problems was always a positive influence on our golf program. He bonded very quickly with our team and will be greatly missed."
Heer completed his freshman year at Carolina while serving as manager for the men's golf team. He also played for Carolina's club golf team. A four-year golf letterwinner at High Point Central High School, Heer was a two-time individual regional qualifier in the N.C. 4A High School Championship, finishing sixth his junior year. He became an Eagle Scout at age 13.
Heer received a bone marrow transplant in May at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md., and was recovering at a nearby apartment where he was staying with his mother. He passed away peacefully in his sleep and a cause of death has not yet been determined.
"Glenn is truly one of the most inspirational people I've ever encountered," says assistant Tar Heel coach Don Hill. "I'm fortunate to have called him a friend and will miss him dearly.
