Tar Heel Golfer Michael McGowan Bows Out At U.S. Amateur

University of North Carolina golfer Michael McGowan fired a three-over-par 75 in the second round of stroke play at the 110th U.S. Amateur which is being played at Chambers Bay here. McGowan, from Southern Pines and a sophomore for the Tar Heels, tallied at 155 total and was not among the 64 players who advance on to match play.
The stroke play portion of the U.S. Amateur was played on two courses, Chambers Bay Golf Course and The Home Course. McGowan's second round of 75 put him tied for 155th place and came on The Home Course. Jeff Wilson of Fairfield, Calif., was the medalist of stroke play as he carded a 74 on Tuesday to finish with a 136 total.
McGowan carded two top-10 and four top-20 finishes last year for the Tar Heels. His best finish was a tie for fifth place at the Maryland Collegiate. He boasts a 73.75 scoring average last year after firing six under-par rounds, three in the 60s, and four even par rounds.
With stroke play concluded, match play begins on Wednesday at Chambers Bay Golf Course which features a par 71, 7,742-yard layout. Match play continues through Sunday with a 36-hole championship final.
